An old/new mix is a very livable way to bring contemporary designs into just about any home. One mix we like in particular is in the dining room:
Mixing a traditional wooden table with contemporary chairs can often produce an appealing ensemble. Same goes for a contemporary table with antique or rustic seating. Take a look at the gallery above for a few examples of this mix.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Perfect timing! I found four modern chairs I love, but have been struggling with what table to set them to. Also-modern just seems too over the top. These combos look great.
Modern white chairs at an old farmhouse table is my favorite look!
I've got three old wooden school chairs surrounding my Saarinen knock-off table... Love the look.
i could use some advice about how to mix a traditional table/chairs w/ modern chairs. i have a duncan phyfe style table and 5 matching chairs. all are currently painted black (the mahogany was in really awful shape including gigantic gouges when i bought them years ago). i've been thinking of repainting/refinishing the table/chairs and adding a few additional dining chairs, but not sure what kind of chairs to go for. eames shell chairs? some other modern chairs? other traditional chairs that i can paint and reupholster to match the existing set? heck, maybe i should submit a whole question w/ pictures to AT :)
Pic # 3 is my fav-love this combo of old and new
I love those hexagonal tiles in pix #1
I love this eclectic look!
I'm such a fan of this mix. I think mixing different eras and styles of furniture in a tasteful way makes places so much more homey and creative looking, versus sticking strictly to one style (ahem, MCM).
yes please.... it makes all the sense in the world!
We have this look in our dining room with my husbands childhood table, an antique farmhouse table, and we love it:

I currently have a glass table with a black steel base. I'm intending to paint the base a high gloss white and then find 4 mismatched, brightly colored chairs on Etsy. I love the combination of modern, traditional and kitschy fun.
I'm about to inherit a semi ornate heavy dark wood table that may or may not fit in our clean lines traditional/classical/modern look. I'm wondering if this post may be the answer to my design problem. I may post a questions with pictures later for further advice. I love the idea, but don't know in real life it my styles of furniture will all be able to meld with this new antique piece...
Off-topic, but I love the cupboard in pic #1. Do you have any info on it?
We have just moved into our first place and I have been searching high and low for a non wood finished pedestal table like picture #5. I would die if anyone had any info on where to find!!
We did this, and I love it. Our 100+ year old farm table ($25 off CL) is pretty rickety though, and I find myself wanting to replace it sometimes, but it has so much charm.
