Name: Derek
Location: Portland
Type: 2 bedroom apartment that I own
Why I use color:
I use color or a lack of color as a way to portray my personality. I actually think it is a shortcut representation of me and who I am. When I have white, it acts like a blank canvas, so I am constantly feeling open to new possibilities. When I use earthy colors, it brings me back to nature which helps me feel grounded.

2 Good color tips:
1-Don't be afraid of colors. You can always change them if you stop liking them.
2-Collect inspiring images and try to discover what it is you like about them. A lot of times it will be the color combinations from a well taken photograph. You can make color palettes from these that you will be sure to love.

Favorite type and brand of paint:
Pantone for its color palette. Benjamin Moore Aura for the quality of the paint. And Dunn Edwards for its hip packaging

You certainly know how to combine the elements. The space is lovely, the bathroom especially. Earthy, yes. Bold? Not exactly. Beautiful details, though.
I love it. It's not bold or brash but I can totally see myself living in the space and feeling totally happy and comfortable AND elegant.
Love, love, love that first picture!
Love the bedroom stripe combination, and the bathroom is amazing (love the log)! Great space, very elegant.
This place is certainly elegant and well styled, I would love to see a full house tour. But the color isn't really one of the main reasons I love it, as nice as it is. I'd say In The Running.
I love the dining set.. the shiny white paired with the fabulous wood! Can you tell me where you got the table?
Love the wooden benches around the dining table. I can see happy meals with lots of friends around that table.
Love the painted tree in the kitchen (though wonder if the electrical plug could be painted an inconspicuous brown to camouflage it).
Love the stripes in the bedroom. Totally works.
Also like the natural wooden headboard that echoes the earthiness of the wooden benches from the dining room.
In the bathroom, a few, simple painted branches or leaves on solid background (as in kitchen tree) would have been better than a realistic forest photo, but that's just me.
Very soothing home. : )
Your place is beautiful (I love that wall-size tree photo in the bathroom) but I don't look at it and think "colorful." You have a lot of wonderful textures, though. It's a very soothing apartment.
I love this! I'm more of a bright orange, red, yellow, green person, but I love your use of natural colors here.
Anyone who thinks this isn't colorful just has one idea of what that means. I see a rich palette of black, white, myriad shades of brown, green, and yellow. How else would you complement natural tones and textures? Excellent job, good luck!
I am a little surpirsed at the responses to this entry. Bold color does not have to be hot pink or vibrant green. It's just as bold to use browns and greys depending on the space. I think this place is very well done - full of varied color and inspiration. The bathroom is FAB!
Well done and thumbs up for the strip in the bedroom - it's a 10 in my book!
Wow. I love everything about this. It's earthy yet clean, vintage yet modern. I dream about a bathroom like that and don't think I could ask for anything more.
so are you single?!! haha I'm in Porltand too and i LOVE your space.. and that view. wow. can you see Hood or St.Helens or are you facing the city?
very well done. good luck with the contest :)
I'm with annaland, this is an intelligent and bold use of colour and texture...very very yummy indeed. bring on the competition!
Another Portlander here, and this is a great place. The colors are evocative of the place, and take cues from the fireplace and the adorable owl on the bed. I'm still attached to my blues and greens, but appreciate and applaud your use of color. Quite bold, actually!
"Anyone who thinks this isn't colorful just has one idea of what that means."

Why do you assume my understanding of boldness is limited to extravagant colors? Naturally there's a lot more to it than that. Overall design choices go a long way. I would describe the space as smart and simple and organic, in general. But I don't look at the photos & think "bold". Nothing wrong with feeling that way & you shouldn't assume that just because someone's opinion is different than yours, they're being narrow-minded. That's just... well, narrow-minded.
who said neutrals couldn't be colorful? this is such a beautiful home, and such a sophisticated use of color. love it!
Where did you get the OWL ? I love it, want to put it next to my UGLY doll.
It's a lovely home, but I don't see how the natural colors really make it stand out. To me, it's too easy to go all natural and have it look nice. The places that make me vote for insta-finalist are ones that use unexpected colors or unexpected combinations.
pdxcarrie, judging from the view, it looks like he's in one of the Harrison condo towers (Harrison West?) and the view is to the North looking over the South Auditorium blocks with Washington Park then Forest Park hills in the background.
Excellent choices....excellent everything!
Like yourself, I love using white and bringing in other sources of color. I appreciate how you have used whites and other neutrals. Nothing is boring in your home-->interesting objects with pops of color, the tree in the kitchen and all the great textures.
From the pictures I have seen, everything appears to work well together-from one room to the next. Nothing looks out of place.
I enjoyed reviewing your pictures and hope to accomplish the same goal in my new space.
tree in kitchen=awesome
This place makes my heart smile. It's so serene.
I love it! I love it! I love it! It's a superstar!
The bedroom is beautiful, I love the headboard.
Love the bathroom, the stool playing off the wallpaper. The accents of yellow and the cute, unexpected owl pillow in the bedroom. Also, jealous of your white galley kitchen.
The living room is very nice and comfortable, but seems a bit boring without that nice view.
I love the owl in the bedroom! The yellow really sets off the earth tones. Beautiful job!
This place is fantastic! It's one of the only examples I've seen on this site of what I consider to be Northwest hipster decor. I lived there for a while myself and this reminds me a lot of the Ace Hotel in Seattle (I think there's one in Portland too?) and the Doug Fir lounge. The whole modern v. rustic thing, in extremes, with cheeky touches like the mural and the owl and the stump. Love it!!
Know what I'm getting stuck on, though? Your cabinet pulls. That's the only thing I'd change; I'd love to see them just be flush. But that's clearly a very minor point.
Anyway, have to concur with other commenters that color isn't what makes me love this place - if anything it could use more of it, in restrained flourishes like the bits of yellow in the bedroom, which are super charming btw.
Also: love the elongated wiffleball light fixture in the bathroom - details, please?
I love the whole thing so much. If you sell your place I'll move to Portland. Can someone tell me where to get the yellow floor lamp on the bedroom??
The spaces use color in such a soothing, simple way and I absolutely get a sense that the person who lives here really thought about the interior space and how the interior colors would relate to the outside views. I think the use of color is perfect - color doesn't have to scream at you to be effective or well done. Also, the bathroom is especially fun, interesting and sophisticated; the colors of the wallpaper, wood, and tree trunk put together made me smile. I love, love, love it.
Very down to earth. Love it!
This IS a fall colors contest and this entry is perfect. From the decor to the color choices...it's great.
I have a modern decor home similar to yours and lately I have been wanting to add more natural objects like your log-stool in the bath or the benches at your table. They pair very well with modern.
My hands-down favorite. I would go so far as to say occasionally stunning. Not so into the bathroom, but I'm tired of the forest wallpaper, probably because I was so into it when it first came out, and I'm not a fan of stumps. The pendant light is fantastic though. Overall its beautiful.
It's just as bold to use browns and greys? Um...no...it isnt.
Browns, greys, and neutrals are - by their nature - not colorful. Thats why they are called "neutrals". I'm not saying they cannot be dramatic - as the bedroom shot proves. But they are not colorful, as in color-full.
Don't get me wrong: this is a stunningly beautiful space. It is very harmonious in its themes and in its restraint. But it is not colorful.
yippee portland! pearl district highrise? can't place it.
Wow. This one is awesome. I'm sad I got busy the past few days and didn't get a chance to vote for it. It demonstrates how much texture impacts color (which is probably the biggest problem with that purple tiles monstrosity entry from last week)
earth colors nice....color contest not!!
I love this. You don't often see early-70s-crochet-burlwood-spaceage-cabinny-modern done well (if at all)! And I'm so tired of painted nature silhouettes, but your reverse tree image works beautifully in that skinny spot at the end of your kitchen. Definitely my favourite bathroom of the bunch, too. So mossy!
WTF!
How did I miss this?
Derek,
Color or no color,
this is one of the top 5 apartments I have ever seen on AT.
I'm intrigued by the paneled ceiling and the flagstone wall. Were these added to the space or did they come standard with the original construction?
i LOVE your home.
LOVE. LOVE.
How did you do the tree in your kitchen? Is it a decal or freehand? It's lovely.
where did you get the forrest poster pattern print thing? I must have it!!!!!!!!!
Wow, can I have Derek's email address? I want to know where he acquired his incredible wood furniture! :D
