After attending Day Two of the big contract design trade show, NeoCon, we came to the conclusion that one of the colors that we'll be seeing lots more of can best be described as pumpkin. This is not the bright, poppy orange that was going strong a few years ago, it is a deep, bold color with rust undertones. We saw LOTS of it as we walked the showrooms and it definitely has a strong seventies feel, even on very contemporary pieces.
Here are fifteen examples - just a drop in the bucket, really. This color was everywhere...

White Enamel Four-P...
We just painted our bedroom this color, and we love it! It is very hard to find the right orange, so we did a lot of testing first (which I highly recommend if you want to go that route - they look so different on the wall than on the little piece of paper). The color is warmer and a bit lighter than the room used to be (a red-maroony color that I hated), and surprisingly cheerful and peaceful at the same time.
I prefer the seventies citrus orange to its pumpkin orange, but pumpkin certainly can be beautiful in other people's homes.
I can usually find something to cheer for when it comes to any color, but burnt orange just grates. Memories of deep shag burnt orange dusty musty rugs at meemaw's house, leftover from the 70's through most of my 80's childhood.
Like it with white and chrome (which brightens it); don't like it with black. It doesn't have to look weird and dusty, unless it is actually weird and dusty. I just think it has a tendency to look like one of those poly/cotton "Festive Fall!" tablecloth colors. But not in these photos.
I really enjoy spotting trends. This one seems to have hit some of the retail stores months ago. Crate and Barrel had these 'old fashioned' Fall colors on display the end of last year as I recall. These are great colors, so long as they are combined with just the right complementary colors. The greys and deep browns shown in some of the photos here are just perfect. I hope to be able to combine wenge wood with lots of white and some grey in one of our next kitchen renovation projects. Perhaps our team can find a way to incorporate some of the pumpkin palette!
I'm a huge fan and user of 70s orange (no shag rugs here, though!), and this is awesome to me. I agree with creative license, though - do NOT use it with black accents or in a way that looks like seasonal decor. Hate that oktoberfest vibe, except for the beer part. Awful!
Love this color. It's been on my livingroom walls for 8 years now and I'm not tired of it yet. It is surprisingly easy to mix other colors with it for accessories. Right now I'm using lt blue and yellow (in the right shades) to lighten up for summer and I've used browns and yellow/gold in the past without looking like a 70's nightmare!

I've always loved pumpkin orange and have used it a lot in the past so I was excited to see this post, but as I look around now it seems that the color has vanished from my interiors completely! I have been considering using it on my front door, as I think it'd be striking against the charcoal exterior and white trim.
Love this color for clothes--never considered it for interiors though. Warm!
greta - great colors! My entry is that exact shade of orange, and the living and dining areas are a couple shades lighter. In fact, my whole color palette is very similar to yours. Two rooms have avocado walls, chartreuse and turquoise accents. It's very warm and happy!
Our walk-out basement family room and the hall and staircase leading to it (and the adjacent bathroom) are all Banjamin Moore Aura paint in pumpkin with white moldings and window trim. We have a blue sofa and blue and white drapes that look great with the orange, artwork with a lot of blue and white, and blue and white Asian pottery.
The bathroom might seem a bit Halloweeny with black granite countertops and antique bronze hardware, but I used a brown with black shower curtain, brown towels, and some Asian acents in dark wood and yellow, and with the white porcelain and trim, you don't feel the season much.
Yuk. Sorry, but I hated it in 1974 and I still hate it today. Rust, burnt orange or "pumpkin" it's still a dirty color.
I love love love this color...it's earthy, spicy, and exotic...reminds me of the small bazaars that you'd find in India, Morocco, etc. This is the base color of most of my accessories for my living room (which is neutral in the walls and furniture) and I pair it with other accessories in jewel toned purples and greens to give my space an exotic, global eclectic style...Somehow, it works in my eyes...
