The conversion of this parking attendant booth into backyard art is the most clever upcycling I've seen recently. It not only gave new life to something destined for a trash heap, it also spruced up the owner's backyard.
Flickr user thepetershow bought this old parking attendant booth with little idea of how it would eventually be used. When he decided to make it part of his back yard, he gave the booth (and his yard) a facelift.
By painting the booth Chinese red and adding plaid FLOR tiles to the floor, it has become the yard's main attraction. To finish off the yard and make it seem like the booth has been in place for years, the owner added some plant life and a faux-Mondrian panel.
The end product: a yard transformed and a great conversation piece. And I love the idea of wiring it with a phone, as seen in the fourth photo. An instant phone booth!

It still doesn't seem to have a purpose... I would of made it a modern potting shed or something.
weird. perhaps a smoking booth for the outdoors?
It still has no function in the yard, so it will be destined for a trash heap eventually. Just a matter of when :-/
It is unique, though, I'll give it that much.
Just being funny....but how about time out for that naughty child? Seriously, I find it odd.
this would not work as a potting shed. By the time you get a shelf instaled, there's very little space to stand, and you can't install shelves over the glass windows (well you could, I guess). I suppose you could use it for just storage, but it does rather stick out, and not in a good way.
Maybe he's hoping for teleportation?
If you add some shelves it would make an excellent Greenhouse.
That is so funny, I had wondered what happened to that booth!!!! I never would've thought it would look so perfect in a residential backyard.
I work at Community Forklift (a nonprofit thrift store for building materials in DC), and four of these booths were donated to us a while ago. It stood out because it is not our usual fare - we're used to mantels and panel doors and kitchen cabinet sets.
We've sold two booths, but I didn't know where they'd ended up. One guy told me he was considering turning it into a home recording studio, but I wasn't sure if he ever bought one.
So when I saw the before picture with the familiar neon sticker, I thought, "That couldn't be one of ours, could it?" And it was!
I think thepetershow was genius to paint it red and to paint the fence panel. It's true, it's pretty offbeat and its function is not immediately obvious...but it just looks so cool and quirky! I imagine that kids would love to play in it. I think it would also be great to take a laptop or a book out there in the fall or spring...it could be a little personal sunroom for days when the sky is beautiful but the breeze is chilly.
Btw, we still have two booths waiting for a good home, if anyone is inspired - or happens to own a commercial parking lot ;-)

Since I'm obsessed with Doctor Who, I would've painted it blue and pretended it was a TARDIS.
Anyway, as it stands, it could use some shelving and I see it could work as a bar, perhaps. You know, store a couple of bottles of booze, some glasses, bar paraphernalia... After all, what does one do in the patio but entertain, right?
It would work better in a backyard with a pool... changing booth! The glass would have to be opaque of course.
I don't get it. This only reminds me of the bus stop-esque smoking shelters one of my employers provided for smokers to use in inclement weather. Not good.
I like this a lot. The function isn't immediately obvious, but that will evolve over time, no doubt. Very fun.
I agree w/ the others:
It would have made a splendid potting shed/greenhouse...
...but an outdoor phonebooth in the iPhone era? Meh.
That yard is too small to put large useless objects in it. This will likely be gone in less than a year.
Love the color, though.
YES! Props to the TARDIS comment!
I like the idea of a bar, a greenhouse, and/or a personal sunroom. If the owner likes those, too, I'll bet there's a way to work a little of each into this quirky little shelter. Nice to stretch out a little and give an idea time to evolve.
I don't really get why painting it red and adding flor tiles means it's different to the white, awkward & pointless... now it's red, awkward and pointless...
Would have made a really cool outdoor shower.
Tess09 hit the nail on the head. An outdoor mini-bar would be the tops.
It looks like the entrance to the Ministry of Magic. . . .
Absolutely a time out space for naughty children. But they'll have to take the phone away and give them some paper so they can write about what they've done wrong.
Written in 1st person singular-- 5 pts.
Using 'upcycled"-- - 1 pt.
Post about cute but useless item-- I really am torn, as the booth is cute, but the yard isn't.
How about acting out The Phantom Tollbooth?
Bar of course
I could see using it as a little hideaway for kids.
I read the following on his flicker stream - sounds like he is also thinking about using it as a bar or potting shed. If it were mine, I would definitely use it as my outdoor office/calm place!
"The Geisha House project is far from over. I need to decide if I want it to be a mini bar for guests and BBQs or a potting :"shed" or a place to check email and do bills. I also want to add to it a roof garden of grass and replace its HVAC system. Oh, did I tell you that it is weatherproof and comes with an electrical outlet, fuse box and overhead light. What a bargain!
Can you Imagine both my sultry summer and cold winter nights finding "respite and calm" in my climate controlled Geisha House?
The true purpose of Geisha House will reveal itself and evolve. THere are some things you can not over orchestrate
For now, I like gauging people's reaction to Geisha House. Some say WTF. But the truly inspired wonder what possibilities it might hold for them if it were in their home. "
a bar would be genius... especially if you remove the glass from the window that faces the yard, and add a serving shelf beneath it for hors d'oeuvre!
Thanks everyone for the comments about my Geisha House. I was pleasantly surprised to see this post---thanks Jason for doing it.
Geisha House as a shower? Hmmmm----Cool idea too. For now, I remain content to wait to decide what purpose it will ultimately serve and just enjoy having it around as a visual element
For those who don't get it---that's OK but know that useless is not always defined by lack of utility and this booth will definitely never end up on my trash heap.
Best in 2010
I would use this in the back yard of a house with a pool as a changing room; putting curtains for modesty. Great color!
i freakin love this ! however i wouldn't be able to not turn it into a TARDIS :D
Outdoor port-o-pottie!
