Yesterday, we marveled at Dora's cozy office nook, a great example of simplicity at its best. So here's an idea for those of you who have the extra closet space (coughIwishcough): convert it into a quaint office area. The end result of this sunshine-yellow bedroom and office combo doesn't seem cluttered or claustrophobic, probably due to the light color scheme and organized shelves...
By removing the closet doors and replacing them with gauzy drapes and painting the inside of the closet an off-white, the office area doesn't seem dark and shadowy--something we'd be worried about if we ever tried this. When the curtains are closed to hide the office, it also gives the bedroom a softer, more romantic look.

Shaw's Original Fir...
i've seen this done before and i think it's clever, although i can't fathom having *extra* closet space. :) the photo above is one of the most attractive closet-offices i've seen.
i think that is the happiest room i have ever seen!
Just beautiful! I love the chenille detail on the curtains, it adds the right amount of texture to ground the gauzy curtains. *sigh* I wish I had a place to convert to a computer nook!
Oh wow Grace, that's really, really innovative and beautiful, thank you so much for the idea. Unfortunately I live in an apartment where I had to buy a wardrobe just because I didn't have enough closets in my apartment. Maybe I should invest in storage, but I guarantee I will find the time and place to implement what you've written here. Great help, thanks.
I wish I had a spare closet...
i wish i liked this. it actually does look cluttered to me. i can't really imagine myself doing work there. it doesn't seem enough room to do anything more than use the computer and even then, the glare from the too close lamp might thwart the effort.
This works well IF you have a closet to spare.
I love the look and feel of this.
I did this in high school, and love to see it executed far more nicely than my attempt back then!! (think... big purple daisies painted on the desk, lol)
I rented a couple of rooms in a house a while back and had an extra closet. I took off the doors and painted the walls inside a deep chocolate, hung some cork tiles and a couple of ikea pendant lamps. I took a piece of glass that I had in storage that was almost exactly the same width as closet but it was about a foot and a half deeper. I put up some simple metal brackets along the back of the closet to hold up one end and had a couple of concrete pillars that I placed at the two front corners.
I found that having the glass stick out of the closet a bit was the saving grace of this setup. I couldn't imagine actually having sit right on top of the closet. I really enjoyed the space that was saved that allowed me to turn the room into a pseudo living room and have a 60" x 42" desk.
I have an office closet. :) I painted it dark purple so it's moody and cavelike though. It doesnt get much natural light so a pale color would have been dingy and depressing. The Ikea Mikael desk was exactly the perfect size to roll into it :D and I put in a shelf for my printer. I'm not satisfied with it, but it served its purpose and I am moving soon anyway.
I didn't *really* have a closet to spare, but I made more storage space by setting up a bed with 36" clearance underneath, TONS of space there!
This really is a happy room. I want a happy room.
So nice! I'd love to see a pic of the entire work space with the curtains open.
These storage solutions and display ideas could work even in a more public area.
I like the look but isn't part of the point of putting the office in the closet is having doors to shut it off?
Must be a guest room, that's the space where a closet is less necessary...
Those curtains are lovely, the use of the pom-pom fringe at the edges of the narrow panels really feels luxurious, not something I have ever thought about pom-poms before!
I have a closet converted office, and it looks fairly descent. This particular one makes me smile because of the brightness! Nicely done.
I enjoy this picture........the only snag I can think of is: no plugs in the closet!
