Give credit where credit is due: Microsoft's Windows Phone team did a fine job throwing us a curve ball by inviting us to one of the more unusual tech-related invitations in recent memory, Cooking with Windows Phone. The intimate press event was held to showcase many of the latest Windows Phones (including the rare all-white glossy Nokia Lumia 900) right before BlogHer Food '12, all under the guidance of an unexpected spokesman...

Instead of the typical slideshow spiel, the Windows Phone team had chef John Sundstrom of Lark in Seattle (a James Beard Foundation "Best Chef Northwest" winner) direct groups of bloggers cooking at five different recipe stations, all using a variety of Windows Phone devices/food related apps.
Not much to complain about when you're invited to eat, drink and be merry amongst a small group of food bloggers from around the country (I believe I was the lone design/tech blogger in attendance, but my better half, Emily Ho, was there to represent Apartment Therapy's The Kitchn) cooking under the guidance of a most affable James Beard award winning chef.
After a soft sell about integrating a few Windows Phone food and cooking related apps in the kitchen (Allrecipes, Epicurious, Foodspotting, Cocktail Flow), attendees broke up into small groups to cook at five stations, where attention seemed equally divided between cooking and snapping photos of their efforts (that's what happens when you put a room of bloggers together). It was a sneaky (and all too effective) way to get a whole room of us forgetting about the technology end and just incorporating devices as another kitchen tool.
Afterwards, all were invited to share plates of caramelized chili shrimp, maple glazed wild salmon, skillet roasted asparagus with Parmesan, Portuguese pork and clams, and chocolate mint cookies, all washed down with a French 75 cocktail (or two)...not a bad way to spend an afternoon, if I do say so myself. Here's to hoping for more press events where food and technology come together with delicious results. I just need to remember to tweet more and eat fewer chocolate cookies next time...or just load up a few more fitness apps.
