Barn lighting and industrial-styled fixtures are hot right now. But if you don't want to pay a bundle for it - in fact, if you want to spend next to nothing - check out the aisles of your local hardware store:

Too funny! I've been looking at those exact lights from recently, thinking they would work somewhere inside.
Do these only take super bright bulbs? I'd like to use a light like this for a reading corner, but don't want a floodlight effect...
I have one clamped to a shelf in my kitchen. I put a halogen light in it to start, but soon put in a regular (non energy efficient) bulb. I bought mine at Lowe's and it has not stood up to daily use very well. The metal shade falls off and ends up dangling around the bulb. Maybe I will try one from Home Depot. I like the look.
I got a clamp light like #1 & 5 when I was in jr. high and agree it does not hold up to regular use well, it seems to pop off of the bookshelves it was attached to. it did look very cool though
I use these for projects and to add extra lighting when doing a photo shoot but hadn't thought of using for home use....good idea...

These are great. Use caution, because an incandescent bulb can cause the metal shade to grow quite hot, that's why some of them have the wire surround. Target sells Reveal Fluorescent bulbs that are shaped like incandescents, and that's what I prefer to use near children, pets, and books.
We have 2 of the home depot versions on a former door-now -headboard in our room, and they are holding up fine. They can get hot, so be careful. We got some low wattage small bulbs or it was way too bright for nighttime reading.
Haha! Fancy seeing these lights featured in AT. They're a staple of inexpensive studio lighting in art school - I have a few of my own left over. The shades do tend to come loose, but they're pretty inexpensive and they do have a simple, industrial look. And I love the flexibility of being able to clamp it to many surfaces.
omoriala - you should be able to put a dimmer bulb in. I've used 40-watt incandecsents in the past. The metal shade will probably still get hot.
I find this post to be hilarious. As a broke artist, this is all I use at home and in the studio. Been using them since art school.
I've had a couple of the #1's clamped to a shelf above my desk for a few years now, and they seem to be holding up fine (though I don't adjust them or move them around much). I use CFLs on mine and have no trouble with them getting hot.
When I was broke, I found that Hardware Stores were my "Go-To" for great lighting, shelving, organizational products, etc - So much better, cheaper and more interesting than mainstream lifestyle chain stores...
The clamp lights in the main photo always works well when light for photo shoots.
Construction worker lights....
Construction worker lights.... I don't want to go there because, frankly I'm so relieved my construction is over.
Home depot has also got cool industrial looking box fans.
i've contemplated getting these for my house for quite awhile, but they get HOT!!! gotta be careful
