CNET reports the New York utility provider, Con Edison, is attempting to make NYC a little more energy efficient by distributing 10,000 ThinkEco smart thermostat outlets to combat peak power use during summer months (aka "CoolNYC
The modlet smartAC thermostat was specially designed to work with the modlet to smarten your window air-conditioner unit. The smartAC thermostat works much like a home thermostat for a central air-conditioner system. The thermostat communicates with your modlet to turn your air-conditioner on and off based on your desired room temperature, and allows you to control the units remotely from your smart phone or computer.
The ThinkEco modlet is a hardware and software combination which permits users to program their window air conditioners as an app-enabled device with their smartphones, offering the ability to set duration or a target temperature. Both of these features are regularly available with newer window AC models, but older units may benefit with these added features (especially if you live in an older unit where the landlord won't change out an older, but still working model), and if used with energy conservation in mind, could lead to lower energy use and strain on the grid (ideally).
NYC residents can sign-up for the free thermostat+modlet via the CoolNYC Program site.
