Q: I just purchased a cool retro couch. I love it — it's the perfect color grey and I got it for a great price! The only thing is that the piping on it was done in a bright orange. It goes well with the gray but I don't have orange in any of my other fabrics. The dining room is open to the kitchen and I just reupholstered my dining room chairs and the fabric has no orange. Should I try to bring in orange in a rug? Or with other fabrics for pillows? Or should I ignore it?

Use a big black permanent marker to go over the trim, and let it dry thoroughly before sitting down. If necessary you can use drafting tape or masking tape to protect the fabric while you are wielding the marker.
you should paint the chairs for your dining room white, or blue, or even grey to go with the fabric and couch. and then i could just bring in some orange with other things. maybe a rug or a vase or a DIY paint chip art or something with orange. i definitely wouldn't put orange on the couch though with pillows and whatnot unless you plan to add more orange elsewhere.
Oooh grey & orange - my fav combination. I think embracing the orange is a good idea. "Hello Orange! My you are bright and lively! Come in and meet our other colors. I'm sure you'll make friends."
You could find a fabric with gray, orange, and maybe the teal or the citron from the dining room chair and use that in a few pillows. Keep your eyes open for orange accents - or figure on painting a few decorative items. Maybe you'll find some art with orange and the other bright colors from the dining room chairs.
I'm not really a fan of orange...although I hear tangerine is one of the 'in' colors this year.
Q: Is the orange piping a fabric piping...it almost looks like it's vinyl or leather?
If it is fabric, I would use duct tape on the surrounding fabric as a shield and lightly apply a grey or back dye to the piping. Squeeze the sponge fairly dry before applying, so it doesn't bleed too much into the surrounding area and stuffing.
If it's vinyl or leather, do the sharpie marker suggested by the previous commentor.
Good luck... and please show us the results!
Don't ignore it. You don't need a lot more orange, but even just a hint of it in a pillow or another chair or a piece of art will help the orange make more sense in the space.
I love the couch! I would not worry about bringing in too much orange, but I would bring in just enough so that it looks intentional. I would do it in accessories or a little bit in art. I think orange pillows would look like you're trying to hard.
I'd say a soft touch with the orange (NOT with pillows) is the way to go. A little orange ceramic vase or lacquered tray on a table somewhere, or a touch of the orange in some art... I think the piping works fine with the chair fabric (though I agree with the above comment to paint those chairs out).
I love that couch and I like your dining chair and don't think they need to match. Why not insert something into the room that incorporates the palette of the orange and the colors on the dining chair?
Try these two pillows:

Any excuse to shop! I think the pillow idea is a good one. Here are two from Etsy that I think would kind of go with your chair fabric...and couch, of course. The one with the white background has a back with stripes w/ colors from your chair. And the other is kind of the same style as your chair fabric only with orange and grey.

Orange and grey into Etsy search and you'll be off to the races! Have fun!
I would do some big neutral throw pillows (light gray comes to mind) and bring in a couple playful orange elements elsewhere, you don't want to add any more orange to the sofa. A cute lacquer tray or a vase like others have suggested on a side table or bookshelf would look really cute.
I agree with themoderngal and michelleb. A very light touch of orange elsewhere in the room should tie it all together.
A vase of orange flowers on the table... done!
Because some parts of the piping will get consistent wear, any sharpie or dye will tend to wear off over time in those spots, such as on the seat edge. Since you liked it enough to purchase it, you must like the orange well enough. I agree with previous posts that a touch of orange elsewhere will tie it all together. At the same time, you'll be creating a more sophisticated room. Go for it!
Ignore! Think about it: Navy pillows: fab. Black and White print: delicious. Honestly, practically anything would go with that couch.
Decorate with what you love and not around your sofa.
I had a pink and grey bathroon in a rental and I really wanted to decorate it in blue but thought it would look odd. A friend suggested to try it and maybe the pink would disappear. Oddly, enough, it did.
If you still feel you need the orange, I agree with the posts who say bring in just wee bits of it. Bring in candy wrapped in orange paper or wine labels in orange..there you go. :o)
Don't ignore it, play it up!!! It doesn't have to be all orange item but rather something with a hint of orange too. Pillows might be nice. Not sure what your style is:

The sofa looks beautiful. It's not a bad complement to your chair fabric. A gray sofa could just as easily have been piped with burgundy, which would still look good on the sofa but which would veer way too "serious" for your chairs. As it is, you've got two pieces that are fun yet muted; they're not fighting each other. Ignoring the orange isn't going to make it go away, but you don't have to kowtow to it either. Just let it mingle. My one tip: When you brings fresh flowers into the room, include some orange day lilies or zinnias or marigolds, and you will see your sofa at its happiest.
Your couch is cool, original and in good condition. I wouldn't even try to match it. The piping gives life to the gray. Keep it as is.
I love that couch and orange is one of my favorite colors. Remember, things don't have to match. They just need to complement each other. I agree with others who say bring a little bit of orange through a vase, small artwork, or flowers.
Awesome couch!! I also agree with those who say just play it up with a few items around the room. The upholstered chairs don't need to be changed. I think the orange piping really adds a lot of interest to the couch - I love it!
For adding small amounts of an accent color to a room, a good rule of thumb is to do it in threes, and space them out. So if you want to keep the orange to a minimum while still making it work, I would recommend having two additional accessories with that color: wall art, vases, a rug, a lamp or light fixture, whatever - but not for the space immediately surrounding the couch.
I absolutely LOVE orange! But I might consider an orange vase or orange flowers (not both), and maybe an orange picture frame. Small pops, if orange isn't your favorite, otherwise you'll end up with a place like mine. I love my place, but I have to warn people when they come over for the first time that is a bit bright inside.
If you can find a rug that's mostly neutrals and other colors you already have, but that includes a little bit of orange, I think that would look great to tie it together without buying a ton of new decor. It'll probably be hard to find the perfect one but rugs are always difficult.
^ you can make your own rug using that cut up t-shirts into a bunch of strips and tying them method. you can RIT dye a few shirts orange and the rest whatever other color you want, like grey or white, etc. and then viola, you have the rug with the colors you want.
YES! sprinkle some orange around all the rooms. It doesn't have to be a lot... an accessory here and there, a throw, a pillow, but use the orange, it's such a lively color and congrats on the sofa, it's fantastic!
Orange is my least favorite color, but I think that sofa is awesome. Don't try to cover up the orange; embrace it.
Two or three small touches of orange should be enough to make the sofa look like it was planned and not a random accident.
I'm not sure I'd put a single sofa pillow on that sofa--I'd rather admire the clean lines than throw pillows all over it.
Take advantage of the fact that orange accessories are EVERYWHERE these days and just dive in! CB2 always has some very cool orange things. And yes, I love your sofa. Like a LOT.
From TLC's What Not to Wear, I learned the term coordinate, not match. You want accessories that give a wink to the piping, but don't match exactly. Nothing worse than matchy-matchy.
If you have any of the kitchen chair fabric left, I'd make one or two toss pillows for the sofa using it. Then I would get some fabric paint from a craft store and paint some of the center dots on the flowers orange!
Add a couple of orange things (vases, baskets, flowers, something...) in the room and call it good!
I like the orange.
Make orange your winter color, and the aqua in your chairs your summer color. For instance:
- Orange flowers in a white vase in summer, plus just one shiny bowl or summery basket with an orange stripe. Lots of aqua in pillows, ornaments, art.
-Put leaves in the vase & add a cosy orange-splotched throw in fall; reduce the aqua to 3-4 items: put orange covers over the dining chair seats.
- Add an orange-touched rug and some pillows in winter, with just one or two spots of aqua.
- Edit out the rug and bring back flowers in the spring; up the aqua items month by month until you are back at summer.
Love the couch, orange piping and all :). They have a cute set of orange metal cans/vases at Ikea now, they would be perfect on the dining room table with flowers.
Do NOT try to paint over it as these commenters are suggesting. That's a recipe for disaster.
I think the orange piping is an accessory in a way. I don't think it needs to match anything unless you want it to. I would not add any orange pillows or anything. I do like the idea of a complementary color as some are suggesting but it would be OK as is, also.
Do you ever watch the Novogratz on TV? I like how their rooms are not overdesigned and matchy matchy. I get that feel from this space. You have a chair you like and a couch you like, so hey! You are good to go.
I recently painted a big mid-century style credenza orange (I was going to refinish it when I discovered that my *teak* craigslist find was veneer!) In any case, I am madly in love with it and so is everyone else. I brought in some orange and green ikea boxes for storage to compliment the orange credenza, you might want to check those out if you're looking for some accents on the cheap. Word of caution: orange paint can take up to six (SIX) coats of paint - if you paint a wall, or a piece of furniture, buy Benjamin Moore or similarly good quality, and buy more than you think you could possibly need :) I heart orange!
As others have said, a little orange goes a long way. Stick with greys, aquas and whites throughout the rest of the room, with a couple of orange accents in a vase, a bowl or a picture. You don't need Big Orange Things; just a hint of it in other pieces.
Do not, under any circumstances, start drawing on the piping of your couch with a black marker.
Don't try to get rid of the orange, it would be asking for trouble. I agree with the suggestion of cushion/s made from dining chair fabric. Two ideas for a touch of orange elsewhere is orange ribbon for a curtain trim or tie back if you have curtains on another window or else trim your chair fabric with that fabric trim (is it called gimp?) that you use to edge upholstery fabric on a chair. I know that it isn't necessary on your chairs but it still might look okay. Probably the easiest is just get an orange vase and tray to display on a shelf somewhere in the room.
I'd leave it as is and not put a jot more orange. As it is, it's a touch. It brings out the color of the walls, and, in my opinion, does well enough with the chair seat. Why orange things up more, when you probably have all you want of that color in the sofa piping?
Since it sounds like you're not a huge fan of orange, add tiny touches. Maybe there's a piece of art you like that complements the colors of your dining room chair upholstery and also has a little bit of orange. Actually, my first thought was to tie in the chairs to the couch; add a few throw pillows that have yellow, gray, and blue. I wouldn't use the same fabric as the chairs. Get something in similar colors but either a different pattern or, if you like floral prints--a different print (smaller flowers, less modern). That way you accent the colors you chose. Then see if you need some more orange--maybe put it in the dining area. You might look for something small that has an orange accent on it, but isn't predominanty orange. If you like photo art, consider a sunset picture, the Golden Gate Bridge, scenery from the desert southwest (think Grand Canyon, New Mexico, or southern Utah), or really anything with a smidge of orange.
The orange trim is the circulatory system of the sofa. Live with it for a while and if you don't like it later on, because of the chair seats, then change the chair seats. That sofa is fab!
