About 8 years ago, my husband and I went to a toy fair at Fisher Price....there was also a car show going on, and many people had these dolls leaning against their vintage autos. It is the creepiest thing I had ever seen.

Incredibly disturbing.

Oh my god, HATE these. If you turn them around, they have no face. The scariest thing ever. Why "grandmas" would want to have faceless pouting children as "decor" is way, way beyond me. Creepy doesn't even begin to describe it.

Oh man, I havent seen one in years! There used to be a booth at our Fall Festival in my hometown that sold those. They sold like crazy (why, that's beyond me). i really thought those went out of vogue (if they were ever in vogue) with the costumed geese from the 80s. Ah, small town living...

My nana had one of these - she's been gone for years but pop pop still keeps it around. it's true about the no face, too. so creepy.

is it a suburban thing? I remember growing up a lot of my mom's friends had them in their houses. I think they are expensive too. Yes, creepy. And I didn't realize they had no face. Very weird.

Never heard or seen one of these, but yikes, are they creepy! I hope they never get popular in Europe.

These are indeed terrible and unfortunately in the Netherlands (where I live) I've seen them too... People put these creeps in their garden in front of their window so it looks like they are looking inside.

I used to work in a University shop and one of the older ladies I worked with brought hers in and dressed it up in the kids' University clothes we sold and put it on display. It would scare the crap out of me at least five times a day.

omg, yes, they are being punished. the site linked above says they are "bad kids corner dolls." i am flabbergasted.

ok, i'm sorry to comment so much but i am just so disturbed.
who wants to pay $87.50 for the "special indian doll"? what is THAT about? stick a "special indian" in your corner as a daily reminder of our troubled history? is it supposed to symbolize the movement to reservations or what? subtle social commentary? (oh, i doubt it.) or do some people just think it is a lovely addition to the home? it is just so bizarre.

I'm thoroughly disgusted. it's scary, bigoted, dehumanizing, desensitizing, and yet perhaps revelatory of the type of people who would be willing to buy these.

smacks of sadism to me.

the grown-up child (adult) who buys these and dresses them up and puts them in the corner (faceless) are obviously angry people. they wish to punish the voiceless and identity-less.. to punish the most vulnerable (children).

where does this desire come from? usually, someone who hated their parents' cold and harsh discipline need an outlet for their unresolved rage. so i'm guessing these corner dolls help them channel that, unbeknownst to the owner. either they want the doll to represent themselves or to represent the parent(s) they can finally 'punish'.

but what do i know, i only have a masters in forensic psychology. :-)

Oh yes. My Nana brought one back from a trip to TN. I unwrapped it, very excited, and found a life sized, faceless doll, with stringy hair and her arms sewn to her forehead. She was a "hide and seek" corner doll. I have never been so frightened of anything in my life. I hope this trend dies before it cripples more children with everlasting fear of the corner and, in my case, hide and go seek.
