Q: I've been in this attic apartment for two years, and it is finally time to make it a real grown-up home with a comfortable couch/seating area, entryway, and replacement for vertical blinds in the bay window. I feel stuck trying to decorate such an unusual space, with all its weird restrictions. I need help with sourcing affordable couches, and with layout ideas.
We're likely be here at least another two years. We host travelers via AirBnB less than 50% of the time, and the guests have curtains to close their area, where we set up air mattress. I've noticed no one ever sits on the DIY bench or dining chairs, so those can go! The bookshelf can go in the office room. I can move the freestanding mantel (a street find!) to fit around the new furniture. I would like to keep the colorful, eclectic feel with a couch, rug, etc. Do I focus the seating area on the mantel or the window? While the room is big (12' by 16'), the doorway to the attic is only 22" wide, with awkward entryway stairs. The issues are the lack of space, the challenge of slanted ceilings, and the budget (up to $2,000).
