Whether siblings need to bunk together due to space constraints or because they want to, sharing a bedroom is often a convenient solution. Not only does it save space, it teaches them to share space. One of the biggest challenges to designing a space that most likely is shared by children of different ages is creating a restful and inspiring bedroom that fits all their varying needs. Here are ten of our favorite shared spaces from the past year:
• Matilda + Baby's Shared Room
• Henry & Adela's Playful But Peaceful Shared Room
• Hudson & Langston: Cozy Travelers
• Lucy Moves in With Violet
• Leo & Luke's Orange Vision
• Daniel Makes Room for a Brother or Sister
• Beatrix & Sis's Matryoshka-Inspired Shared Room
• A Monochromatic Room for Siblings
• A Hand's On, Use-What-You-Have Room for Sisters
• A Vibrant Room for Three

Shaw's Original Fir...
I think this is great that kids are sharing rooms. This means when they wake up with nightmares they are less likely to wake the parents. More sleep for parents. Also less room for parents to clean. My neighbor lives in her three bedroom home where she grew up with her 7 other siblings. One bedroom was the girls room with twin beds and sleeper sofa. The other the boys room with the same furniture and then mom and dad's room. My parents had the same set up when they grew up in their respective homes. Kids don't need their own bedrooms. If they share their bedrooms with siblings they will be better able to share a residence hall room in college and in the cubicle world of the office. They will learn to compromise and be respectful of others and helpfully to think about how their actions will impact others. We can only hope.
While lovely many of these rooms will require lots of house cleaning. They are also dangerous for children. Wall mounted shelves above the beds and cribs are never a good idea nor are tall bookcases next to the beds. These things can fall on your children. Don't risk it. Many other options exist to add color, pattern and style to children's rooms in a way that is both safe for them and easy for you to keep clean.
Use paint to create colorful images and words on the walls rather then then framed art, flags and shelves filled with decorative things that children won't appreciate and you have to dust. Add color and pattern through the sheets and comforter covers on the bed.and through thick colorful curtains lined with a blackout liner. The bedding and curtains will be easy to clean just throw them in the washing machine.
The added benefit of a thick curtain with a blackout liner is that your children will sleep better and longer and thus so will you. Children are very sensitive to light. If you are having a hard time getting your kids to bed at night turn off the lights all over your house so you just have a small table lamp on giving a small pool of light in one room of the house.
Choose furniture that is solid and low. Children will try to pull themselves up on anything when first walking and you don't want them pulling the furniture down on themselves. Older children may use drawers as climbing steps to get to the top of a dresser to retrieve the items located there. For safety purchase purchase low boy dressers instead of tall dressers. Locate children's books on low and wide bookshelves no higher than two shelves high that are solid or put kids books in the living room with adult books or in a basket in the kids rooms.
Eliminate the following things to make cleaning easier: throw rugs, decorative pillows, any stuffed animals over two. Why give yourself extra things to vacuum, dust and wash? Everything you bring in to your home has to be cleaned and maintained . Tell your family friends no stuffed animals but books and donations to their college funds are welcome. You can always say its because of allergies. If you get duplicate books you can save them for re-gifting.
Sharing bedroom is a great idea. They do fight from time to time, but in this way they learned to sort out their differences. I hope that this will help them to learn cooperation and sharing and they develop a strong bonds with one another.
