- What do you love about your bedroom?:
- A noisy neighbor inspired the creation of an insulation-backed wood 'headboard' that covers an entire wall.
- What are your tips for creating a beautiful, healthy and organized bedroom?
- Eliminate clutter and unnecessary items from the room.
- In modern homes, bedrooms have become more than just a place to sleep; they can be a retreat, a home office, a library, a relaxation zone. What are some ways you make the most of your bedroom?
- Originally my bedroom was separated from the rest of the studio by a large floor-to-ceiling bookcase. Rearranging the layout to make the bedroom a focal point has made my space feel much larger.

This is really cool, I like it a lot. And what a great way to solve a problem that so many people face.
Also, while I realize this is far from a small space to begin with, I really like how the dark wood almost seems to open up the room, rather than close it in. I think a smaller room could take some inspiration from this, too.
Just all around nicely done, Craig!!
wow, full apartment tour please!
Great, creative problem solving, Craig! The use of bright sheets, and textured bedspread adds interest, as do the fabulous crates. Did you make the bed base too? Very impressive.
Love the headboard and the whole room...simple and beautiful. I do have to say that I can only imagine how banged up my feet/shins would be on the platform!
i need specs immediately on that headboard, what kind of insulation/sound blocker did you use??
Can someone tell me about that fan?
I totally agree that dark color opens up the room, it's why I installed dark wood floors and recently painted the south facing wall a deep charcoal color. For a small apartment the right dark color can really open up the space and makes it feel airy, I don't why it works but it does.
Yes, tutorial please! Outside of getting one, I think Craig must have used sound dampening material made for recording studios, and used heavy-duty staples to sttach it to the back of the boards.
That fan looks like this one from Home Depot: http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/202794268?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&storeId=10051&N=5yc1vZc4k5&R=202794268#.UT9kZxXs01I
We had one for an outdoor patio space and it worked well but was quite loud.
when you think about it, not much is going on yet this room is so stylish and chic...and modern.
Love how simplicity and a focus on a few things can be so sophisticated. Great!
Your bedside "tables" are rad.
This is killer. Really hot.
That's quite a bedroom fan :)
This is the first bedroom I've seen that I'd actually want to live in! Great use of materials and textures. Genius with the headboard.
Nice! I just bought the same comforter... my bedroom is tiny, smaller than this, & it needs something interesting, the back wall is great... might be a good option for me...
Nice. We need to insulate our wall as our neighbours are unbelievable. I fall a sleep with both of them snoring their life out. Not even the white noise sound can help. Grrrr
Love everything. Great job. Please share the insulation idea. Tx
Yes, please send information about insulation. I've been squinting at the photos for a half hour trying to figure out what's behind the wood. From the 4th photo it looks like the stuff that you put in drywall but I can't be sure.
The framed poster that is the exact width of the stretch of wall between the bed and window throws things off balance because it fits there so snugly. I'd suggest switching it with the tiny piece that's leaning against the wall? Other than that, this is my favorite one by FAR! Best job I've ever seen of making renter's carpet fade into the background. I'd love to know more about the nosy neighbor!
stacyg, where did you find the comforter? I love it!
Streamlined but still warm urban space--nice! Before you explain how to do the insulated headboard, I'd be curious to hear how well it actually works--are you still hearing the neighbors?
Also LOVING the look and possible utility of the wood/insulation headboard wall. My question is, how thick/heavy is the wood, where did you get it, how easy was it to work with, etc.?
This *definitely* deserves some kind of tutorial in a separate post.
Love the bed area. This is my favorite in the contest so far: original and unique.
Love the wall/headboard. Nice!
The duvet cover is from west elm.
Where can I buy this beautiful comforter???
WOW. Practical problem-solving AND great design. Seriously, when I saw the "headboard" it never occurred to me it had any purpose other than being chic. Love the tables, love the fan, love that the bed is low. I'm a white-sheet grrl, but you might change me. The color of yours is such a great punch in the room.
I'd appreciate seeing a tutorial on the sound-dampening solution.
I'm really impressed by how fantastic that bed turned out - I love the platform and the insulated dark wood is inspired! And WHO doesnt need a wind machine next to the bed? Great job!
I saw Ryan Gosling buy two of those huge fans at Home Depot and he put it into his 7 series BMW
Very, very nice! That fan looks like it would blow you out of bed, no?
EFF YEAH! Ryan Gosling!
Love the creative solution to soundproofing in a studio - so much inspiration in this small space
Anyone know where I can find the base?
I'm looking for low profile platform in white and Craig's is exactly what I have in mind, only in white
Great modern simple masculine room!
Good luck,
Julie

Very, very nice! That headboard and the bedding colour combo are spectacular.
Spectacular! Crisp and modern. Perfect for the space it is in. Great, great job! Congrats!
@ninja_neer, @Pi, @Firuze, @emmelemm, @Jukesgrrl --
I used two 4ftx8ft pieces of pink foam insulation as the backing. I think I ended up w/ the 1.75-2in thick version.
I made a frame around the insulation using 2inx2in boards. Then I attached the framed insulation to the wall w/ screws in the corners. I rent, and wanted to minimize the damage to the unit's wall.
Next, I attached some 1inx12inx10ft pine boards to the frame. Two coats of ebony stain and I was done. Did the whole project in a weekend for around $200.
__________
@surfjack -- I live in a 450 sq ft apartment -- nice to hear you think it looks spacious!
@Lynne M S -- The platform bed was a floor sample from Orange Skin in Chicago.
@pierrotdances -- I'll try to get some more information about it for you.
@bfergie13 -- I bang my shins on it almost every morning!
@BradG -- @meryl! is right. The fan is from Home Depot.
@fizzfizz -- I agree the art to the left isn't right. I'll try something smaller (and lower) there. Thanks for the suggestion!
@katelinni, @see, @Bmni -- The duvet cover is from West Elm.
@bellsonhopi -- The headboard has blocked around 80% of the noise I was hearing.
@KatSD, @travislessness, @meryl! - The extremely loud fan takes care of the other 20%. I turn it to face the wall during winter to keep the white noise without the extra chill. :-)
Thanks everyone else for the compliments -- glad to hear you enjoy my space as much as I do!
1) i love chicago. my best bud lives there, and when i go to visit him, i just love it. cheesie's for me every day foreverrrrr. haha.
2) i am crazy interested in doing this in my next place, minus the insulation because i won't need that. i guess i could do it by making just the frame and attaching the front boards. what did you use to attach it to the wall?
also! i'd love to know where your bed lamps are from. do they get hot?
feels very masculine, it's killer! love the bedside tables
@cdica002 -- I used long screws to attach the frame to the wall. The lamps are from Home Depot. The metal shade does get hot, but the plastic base switch does not.
Perfect styling, the great view and wide window is awesome, congrats!
I'm down with this.
