Have a box of a room that's just made up of four walls with little architectural detail? It can be tough to come up with a layout given that much freedom. But it can help to begin to create a framework for yourself:
Take a cue from this Tribeca living room by Lisa Sternfeld Interior Design. A pair of stand-alone shelves flanking the sofa create niche for the main seating area in the room. Using movable shelves like this to anchor a space is smart, as their location can be adjusted and easily "customized" to different spaces as you relocate over the years.
Want the look at home? Try some of the suggestions from this Good Question for shelves that might work.

Nice, although maybe sort of obvious?? I love the side chairs.
Those WILLIAM KATAVOLOS sling chairs drive me inside. SO sexy.
AT's working overtime this morning with some great spaces. Keep it coming!
The same applies in the bedroom. Think blah wall with a window, add flanking shelves & a table or chaise in the middle next to the window. et voila - instant feel of architectural interests.
I do really like that these shelves [& rest of decor] feels airy. When attempting something like this setup, it gets far too easy to use bulkier pieces that can overwhelm the space. If you have issues with claustrophobia, you might want to stay away from shelves with backs and sides.

If this is the level of suggestions, I'll skip buying this book.
I love this idea! Thanks so much. I'll have to do this at our next place, where we'll have more room.
^Hunted - Thanks for posting the designer of the sling chairs I couldn't think of the name. They are without a doubt the standout of this space.
That's one sexy living room.
The only downside I see is a lack of lighting, but that could be easily resolved with some clip-on lamps on those bookcases.
shelves are from Oly if anyone was wondering. They're beautiful in person.

that would be "drive me insane" but maybe somebody understood me... & you're welcome.
Those are my favorite chairs, when I see them my heart skips a beat.

...until the leather snaps and the chair's middle support slices your **s right in the crack :)
Peace :)
the space that our tv has to sit is against the only 'open' wall.
the wall that i would have to set this up on is wall to wall windows. (picture this photo, but with wall to wall windows behind the shelves).
i've always thought it was in poor taste to put shelves (or anything, for that matter) in front of a window, but i'm finding there is not much other options for myself.
any thoughts on this? would it be too peculiar?

TacoBell- Did that happen to you? OMFG. Are you permanently traumatized? Sorry to hear about your ass, but leather is easy to come by for a replacement seat.
"would it be too peculiar?"
Yes, too peculiar.
Stick with end tables and table lamps on either end - and hang some great draperies to frame out your view and to back up your symmetric tableaux
