We've got a small file box on top of our desk. It's a great way to keep reference papers nearby and tidy, but it can be quite a desktop space hog. But now that we've seen this IKEA hack, we're making the switch: Move those hanging files to the side of your desk, with an open storage system crafted from $10 of IKEA parts.

If you've been looking for an out-of-the-way-but-still-at-an-arms-reach spot to store your files... well then, ....you probably gave up a long time ago.
But we're here to tell you your search was not in vain, our organizationally challenged friend. There is a perfect solution: Just reach for a couple of IKEA's EKBY BJÄRNUM shelf brackets ($10 for a 2-pack at IKEA.com)

They're hollow, designed to cover the edge of the shelf they hold up. But by mounting them to the side of your desk sideways, you'll give yourself a great little "lip" for hanging files to hang on to.
These images are all the how-to you'll need, but we do want to add one bit of advice: Measure twice, mount once. You'll want to space the brackets' inside edges exactly as far apart as the hooks on a standard hanging file folder.
The idea is simple and sleek, if you pull it off right. Invest in some patterned hanging file folders that match your decor (we love to scour The Container Store's enormous selection) and you'll be stashing papers with style in no time.

Howard Butcher Bloc...
vain, not vein. Great idea!
This is fantastic.
Brilliant! No space on the side of my desk (& no way would I drill holes in my lovely teak mid-century secretary), but the adjacent wall is paneled with old barn wood that is plenty strong enough for this hack. Thanks!
nice work. wish I had the room for this, but I'm thinking this might work on the wall to the right of my display, though!
One additional thought - the files could get heavy so watch where you screw the brackets into.
Great idea.
Brilliant idea!
A thought - for quick access to you favorite pens and whatnot you can put them inside the shelf brackets. :)
What a great idea....thank you!
Mister Three: you must admit that you are glad that she didn't search in vein. ;)
Best. Ikea hack. Ever.
AWESOME!
