Q: I need help designing the right look for my living room. For the living room, I ordered this blue-green Mitchell Gold velvet sofa and want to keep my current pineapple rug. What is a good coffee table and pillows to finish the look?
I also have a sad and lonely gray wall next to the sofa. Together the room seems naked and needs sprucing. Help me please to create a warm and inviting living room!

Editor: Carisa- You are off to a great start with your fabulous sofa and that pineapple rug. You might consider a glass-topped coffee table if you want to show off the pattern of the rug. We would love to see you exchange that grey wall for something in a warmer tone, and recommend bringing in some additional pops of color by hanging some art on the walls.
We are sure our readers have opinions to share in the comments below- help Carisa build the room her new sofa deserves!

Great start. On its own, I like the grey wall. With the sofa and rug, warmer paint. Perhaps apricot or gold. Could the side table be switched for something with legs, or perhaps a porcelain seat http://tinyurl.com/mmf6pd or http://tinyurl.com/ncakfn
On second thought, a wall colour that runs the gold hues in the floor up the wall will both illuminate and warm.
I think your window treatments will also be a giant contribution to the feel of the room. Something sheer and white will let in a lot of natural light, while allowing you to paint the wall behind it a different, richer color. Or, you could go with deep curtains for an overflow of color, if that's your style. Regardless of design preference, be sure to treat your windows with care!!
well I love what you have so far and I think you ow us an after pic! I would suggest a wrought iron table like the Tanner from PB http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p7277/index.cfm?pkey=ccoffee-tables
Some sheer light floor length curtains maybe in a linen? ANd is there any way to get the couch out of that bay window? It's begging for reading chairs!
I also think the gray wall needs a new life. Maybe a really warm burnt orange would be nice. You could take a Hawaiian shirt with the colors you have in it and see what other colors are there and use those as your accents. Not suggesting an island room - just the colors!
I think you have it right with the deep brown, but I would switch out the leather for some rugged wooden accents. Have fun!
A big piece of art on that grey wall--one that ties in with the colors of yuor couch & rug (or couch pillows) will tie the room together.
A big dark wood coffee table would look good in your space too.
Don't go for a wall color that is too dark or bright or takes away from the focus of the sofa and the rug. Maybe a warmer, slightly darker shade of grey/greige.
What that photo screams for more than anything is window treatments.
And try getting some more interesting lamp shades.
i think you need a much paler gray on the walls and ditto on leggy tables (if not glass, see thru/reflective)
the scale of those lampshades is awkward given the heaviness of the sofa and the depth of the rug.
maybe you should go custom on the pillows. find something that marries the blue and yellow and a bright third color (red?) that you can play off for other accessories/art.
I'd try chocolate brown for accent pillows, white sheer curtains with chocolate brown velvet drapes. If you can't hang anything on the wall, how about a tall, silver framed mirror (a great big honkin' one) propped up against the grey wall (I like the grey wall, btw).
Coffee table --- something low -- maybe one of those tufted ones that doubles as a big ottoman?
Red window dressings (roman shades or drapes), paint the gray wall white to match the rest of the room, a coffee table (glass, as suggested by the blogger), a white upholstered side chair with a colorful cushion, art on the gray wall, a leafy plant or two. Move one of the floor lamps over to stand next to the future side chair, get a table lamp for the side table near the couch.
Finally, move one of the floor lamps and one of the ottomans over to where the leather chair is and add a small table for a reading nook. Get rid of the leather ottoman/bench thing...you have far too many similar-looking pieces.
OMG! you have my same color combo! Here's how I added some punch to my golden rug and spa-green sofa:

I think the contrast you need with your walnut wood tones is just a little pop of coral red accents.
I would go with a lighter shade of the pineapple on the walls, all the walls because I hate focal walls in contrasting colours. Put a big mirror or LARGE piece of art on that currently-gray wall.
You could also use either a bunch of small mirrors (I would go with rounds in that case) or a bunch of small pictures but get a lot. A scattering will look sad and lonely.
I would get one more small-scale chair for that wall, in a different style than the chair you have, and a tiny console or end table for between them, a mirrored/silver table preferably and I would tie it to a similar coffee table.
For drapes I would consider a color similar to your sofa, but sheer.
For pillows I would seriously consider orange. It'd be a warm shot of color but not overpowering. Another option would be a (not too shiny) metallic, preferably a warm one like copper or bronze. But pear green would be light and inoffensive and a lighter shade of the blue-green could be pretty.
Nice base to work on, but definitely needs to be warmed up. It's very austere and...uptight. The shapes are very confined and everything is pointing upward. I'd like to see something more organic and sculptural in there, like others said in natural wood. I agree with glass top coffee table, but not an austere shape (the noguchi would look good). Maybe a lamp with an arc somewhere? I think reds, oranges or browns would help. And I second the large artwork on the gray wall with warm reds. Good luck.
Also, I'd get rid of the leather stools, I think they make the room heavier and colder.
I think that a few coral accents woudl look great, like for the pillows or maybe even some sheer curtains
I love that grey wall. It needs some art for sure. Or even a buffet table.
I also second window treatments.
But for a table, I wanna see something low, modern and stark for some reason.
Normally I hate painted furniture... but here I think it might be suitable. A couple of pieces of occasional furniture (a small sideboard, a lamp table, that sort of thing) in different colours from the blue/green end of the spectrum could give this area the little kick of whimsy that it needs. I'm thinking cobalt blues, chartreuses, summer greens etc - use paint colour swatches to find shades that tone with your couch and rug. Then check out your local discount pine furniture barn for unfinished pieces: they should be pretty cheap and dead easy to paint.
First off - Please finish painting the room, and consider having 6" crown-moulding installed. The entire room will feel warmer and more finished if you continue the color all the way around and add the trim at the top of the walls to balance the lovely deep baseboards and door casings.
Bring the sofa out into the room from the window bay and get a pair of chunky square-armed armchairs in a cream/ivory shade to place on either side of the sofa facing inwards towards a rectangular coffee table - preferably something vintage with a brass base and a glass top.
For Draperies, I'd continue the color of the sofa up onto the windows - there are some silk draperies in a similar color available from the mainstream retailers right now. Choose floor to ceiling panels hung on chunky dark wood rods layered over some honey-toned roll-up matchstick bamboo blinds.
Bring the color of the rug up with yellow throw pillows for the sofa and armchairs. You could even get creative and buy a large canvas and paint it w/ some of that same yellow and a bit of your blue in bold patches over the white - Think "Rothko". Hang this over a dark wood credenza on the wall that's currently painted grey.
Get a pair of end tables that match the height of the arms of the sofa and a pair of chunky Blanc-de-Chine or Chinese Blue & White lamps with drum shades which have some contrasting ribbon banding top and bottom which match your blue. The two existing lamps can go on either end of the console till you get some better lamps - the light scale of those don't work in this room at all. Scatter your stools around and accessorize - limiting yourself to your blue, yellow, white, dark brown and brass/gilt - and you'll be set.
I agree with a glass-topped coffee table. Maybe two expresso colored end tables for either side of the sofa - black or white wouldn't distract from the colors you want to focus on.
A nice large piece of art (or maybe two or three smaller ones) would look good on the wall where you have the chair and storage bench. It needs some color there.
I would probably get rid of some of the leather stools in exchange for another chair something like the other one you already own. All the stools are screaming college apartment.
Lastly, buy two more pillows/cushions for the couch and at least one per seat (as in chair, bench, etc) in the colors of the couch, rug, and whatever art you use.
I agree with the posts above that recommend some rich draperies. It's a lovely nook and a lovely color palette to work with. I would also replace the heavier side table with something lighter. I think these stools/side tables would be fantastic: http://17thandriggs.com/ribbonstool.aspx - adding texture and lighter tones to the room.
The heavier leather stools can be prettily incorporated into the overall look - if you add some lighter chairs opposite the sofa, a glass table, the stools can make an interesting contrast to the look and add a bit of dimension with their rich color. Some delicate decorative accents - I'm thinking some polished chrome, glass, etc. will play off of the stools well. Also, the orange throw pillows will look lovely and pull the heavier and lighter aspects together.
I'm liking the analogous scheme you've got going on right now with the green, aqua, and yellow. You can tie it together with some artwork and toss pillows. For window treatments, perhaps some woven blinds in a warm tan. I agree about the lamps--they're looking a little lost against that sofa. Might be better off somewhere else in the room.
Your room reminds me of a Matte Stephens print! Love it. I also love the grey wall and it works, if you ask me, but yes, sprucing required. So, on that vein, I'll just go with a few specific accents-
Starting with a Matte Stephens print- http://bit.ly/v04lM
He has some big prints that might look fab on the grey wall.
I'm loving this lamp for the room (to swap out for one of the floor lamps) in Orange Ginko or maybe the Red Mumm - http://bit.ly/12wXk3
I'm in favor of dumping the leather ottocubes and going for a table in one of 3 directions- this http://bit.ly/1wU4Vw (wait wait, Overstock has it for $170?! http://bit.ly/j5DQ5 )this http://bit.ly/1Kqhzi or maybe even http://bit.ly/1Kqhzi
For a color punch, if you dig - http://bit.ly/p7mi1
Obviously the curtain solution will help change the mood immensely in the room, and I'm jealous of all the light you're getting! And yes, a chair or two somewhere in there would be good, along the grey wall probably since I"m guessing the couch faces a TV. Good luck!
Can anyone tell me where this rug is from? I really love it and would like to get one for myself!
