To me, hammocks are the epitome of relaxation. Beach views aren't included when you hang one in your home or backyard, but you'll feel like you're on vacation once you put your feet up in that hammock.
Given that you can hardly do more than read or sleep in a hammock, they offer a laid-back way to lie back and enjoy whatever space you're in. In a backyard, the benefits are obvious. (If you don't have any trees to use, there are freestanding options from companies such as Brookstone and Fatboy.) Inside your home, you'll gain an unexpected seating (or sleeping) spot — just be sure to bolt it into wall studs.

@TEAGIRL, it looks like a custom-painted wood deck, on the left side of the deck you can see the slats where there is some board separation. Looks like stencil work.
i love hammocks. a lot. but i wouldn't recommend them for anything more than napping. they'll do a number on your back if you sleep in them full time.
My father slept in a hammock while in the navy in WWll, with no ill effects. They can be quite comfortable as long as you lie in it at an angle, or perpendicular, if it's wide enough. We have one strung up in the back yard, between two trees. When you're in it, you're looking up at the sky through the tree branches. It's really dreamy.
I have a hammock in my living room and it's my favorite reading spot. The gentle swaying and cocooning are instant relaxers. It's also a favorite with guests - especially kids!
