Creative Camper: A Retrofitted, Rustic Makeover

Plenty of us have dreamed of hitting the road in a sleek Airstream. Fewer have seen the potential in a 1959 Chevrolet Viking short bus. One creative owner did, and enlisted architect Will Winkelman, designer Vincent Moulton, and master woodworker Tony Jose to convert this Viking into a beautiful, travel-ready camper.

The bus, which had been sitting unused in a field, was restored both inside and out. Early in the restoration process, Winkelman and his client discussed putting it on blocks and using it as a guest room only. The "allure of using it for transportation" was too great, however, and they eventually did an entire mechanical rebuild to get it back on the road. The interior was designed to have a "moroccan vibe," with beads, multi-patterned fabric and warm colors. To make it ready for camping and storage, Winkelman enlisted Tony Jose, a woodworker specializing in custom boats, to design cabinets and other wood finishes. It can now transport 13 people in charming vintage style.
