Victoria in Laredo, Texas (where it's HOT) couldn't find a windshield shade large enough for her van, so she made one out of a local election sign. It's reflective and does the trick.

Object(s): Local election signs
Project: Front windshield shade
Instructions/Inspiration: The frontshield window in my van is so big that I can't find a cover (for shade) that is big enough. Solution: we made some out of 'corrugated plastic' (I'm guessing) from leftover local election signs of '06. We also made one out of cardboard for our window but is not as sturdy and does not reflect light the way the plastic does, but cardboard can be painted/decorated. We just cut it to size and made an accordion fold. I also saw this lady flying away when she was holding one of these signs on an unusually breezy day here in Laredo, and it was so funny, I mean, inspirational, I'm thinking we can use them for skateboard sailing.

(Thanks, Victoria!)
