Q: This is gonna sound totally granola but what should I do with my old yoga mat (that I took good care of)? I tried using it as a cat bed but my grumpy cats weren't havin' it.

Give it to someone else to use as a yoga mat?
The pic of the cat is crackin' me up! LOL!
Haha, are you kidding? I can't keep my cats off mine, especially when I'm using it.
This list is so-so, but if you have a car I'd recommend using it to line the trunk. It works well for bringing home bags of groceries, etc. http://life.gaiam.com/gaiam/p/50WaystoReuseYourYogaFitnessMatBestidea.html
haha, bepsf. Yes. Or donate it to a rec center that has yoga classes? I dunno.
AT bloggers would say: Cut it up and make a yoga mat mosaic headboard.
That cat is awesome, and the Gaiam list is great. My first thought was to put it under a rug as padding and to keep the rug from skidding.
Ditto on using it as a rug pad. My old one is the perfect size for my front hall runner.
See if you can donate it to a local yoga studio, school, community/rec center, park district, or prison. Many of these places that provide yoga for low to no cost often take mats that have been well cared for.
wow...really digging with this "good question", huh?
Use it under the cushions in your couch to add some extra padding.
Give it to me!
why not continue to use it as a yoga mat?
There was something about this in Yoga Journal a couple of months ago. Two suggestions they had were recycleyourmat.com, which, um, recycles your mat, and theboldermatcompany.com, which collects mats still in good condition and sends them out to programs that do yoga with at-risk populations. (It's the March 2010 issue, pg 26-- there's also suggestions for reuse if you want to check out the rest of the article)
Feline Cobra pose!
Those elbows are pretty straight. I'm thinking more Upward Facing Dog.
I agree with the giving it to other people interested in yoga. Not everyone is able to throw money around for something they may or may not stick with in the end (treadmills, anyone?). Everyone deserves an opportunity to get fit.
Donate it to a community yoga studio. Cute cat though!
I sacrificed a yoga mat to my very senior dog's crate.
I had been looking everywhere for some type of non-slip pad for her and was finding nothing up to snuff. The yoga mat was perfect! It keeps her from sliding as she gets up (she's pretty arthritic and it's hard for her to get as much traction nowadays), it's cushy but still cool, it fit perfectly when snipped in half and doubled up, it doesn't budge, and it's easy to wash.
Doesn't help if you have a cat, but for those looking for ideas themselves or who have dogs that love their crate homes, it's a great trick.
I also like the idea of using it as an anti-skid rug mat for under a runner. I may steal this idea when my current yoga mat gets beyond cleanable.
Use it as a wipable, springy, non-slip kitchen mat in front of your sink.
I have two cats, and have found a yoga mat (cut to size) useful when placed in front of their litter box. I've used a few of the remnants as anti-skid pads for various things in our bedroom, as one of them tends to get destructive by pushing things off of nightstands early in the morning.
I also recommend putting remnants underneath heavy ceramics to protect the surfaces on which they're placed, and to keep them from slipping off.
Donate to a yoga center, OOOORRR to a pet shelter!! They can use it in the crates or something.
It could also be a kitchen or bath mat if it's in decent condition.... or be cut for putting under things like plant pots.
But, I think donating it to either a pet shelter or someone who could use it would be great. It could even spark a friend's interest. Who knows.
But what the hell does "totally granola" mean? Under 25 and I'm already unhip. :P
Or use it for your car floor or for picnics!!
Have you got kids? They make a great non-slip surface under water tables and anywhere kids want to splash water on tile, then run and bonk their heads.

I second londonverve's suggestion:
put it in front of the litter box. my cats are "jumpers" and always spread litter out in front of the box, but a yoga mat is just tacky enough to help catch a LOT of the runoff. I just pick it up and dump it all back in the box every few days. Also, it's much gentler on their little cat paws that all the other litter mats I've seen.
Ah, beyourownsavior -- you mere kid!! ;^)
"Totally granola" refers to the Early Days when hippies roamed the earth and were the group responsible for the popularization of granola as a snack/breakfast food ("all natural", of course.) I'd interpret the poster's use of the phrase to indicate an excessive desire to recycle something that is also kind of "New Age" in the first place... but maybe she will elucidate for herself!
(So I guess it's not actually unhip to not recognize a Historical reference... just not very groovy!) ;^)
old yoga mats make great corner covers for little ones not to hit their heads! I cut mine up and taped it over table corners. Also they work great for camping to lay something down under your sleeping bag. :)

You just made my morning with that one! I laughed so hard my tea came out of my nose!!!!!
BTW, for those who suggest using yoga mats under rugs to prevent slipping, guess what?!
This is from:

--------------
JadeYoga grew out of Jade Industries, Inc., a company that had been making non-slip natural rubber rug pads for area rugs since the early 1970s and for many years sold rug pads to select yogis for use as yoga mats. In fact, the birth of JadeYoga really brought yoga mats full circle as the first yoga mat was a rug pad; as the story goes, B.K.S. Iyengar was in the United States doing a demonstration on an oriental rug, but he was slipping - a student took away the rug - leaving the pad and the first yoga mat.
Love the cat:)
My cat stretches like that.... she has no hip on one side and does these *really* deep bends to stretch out the pseudojoint that's formed.
Where do you live? If it snows where you are toss it in your trunk. They work just as well as salt or kitty litter when you need some extra traction.
