I'm just back from "Inside Design: Amsterdam" an annual long event from Elle Decoration showcasing amazing design from the Netherlands and beyond. It took place in storefronts, studios and homes in IJburg, the very new neighborhood in the east of Amsterdam. One of my favorite finds from the (really amazing!) show was the work of Mae Engelgeer...Mae's textiles are a perfect mix of old school, beautiful production practices and fresh, modern color and pattern. Many of her pieces are produced through a collaboration with the Textile Museum in Tilburg, where she developed the patterns while learning about traditional methods of textile production, ensuring a high quality result.
She has 4 collections, from an upholstery fabric called "Cover" (based on the patterns of old mattresses! - which is much prettier than it sounds, trust me) to her latest, the just launched Woww - a highly graphic knit collection in gray, cream, blue and shades of orange/red.
Mae lives and works in Amsterdam and, somehow, it shows - her designs just really seemed to capture the energy, color, mindset and general zeitgeist behind the very exciting design scene taking place there now. Aside from being beautiful, the pieces she produces also affordable and accessible; her work is sold throughout the Netherlands, as well as through a few online sources.
