We love the look and quality of many modern cribs on the market right now (Netto Collection, Oeuf, Nurseryworks) but the truth is that many people—especially those saving for a new baby—can't afford a crib that costs as much as these designers are charging. Thankfully, there are good options on both ends of the price spectrum…
Netto Collection (Online): Nice stuff, with lacquered finishes and white ash construction. After introducing the Loft and Moderne collections a few years back, David Netto expanded his high end collection, introduced a new lower priced collection called Cub (which can be found at CubKids.com) and sold his crib company to Maclaren.
Zac and Zoe (Online): An emphasis on service and free shipping is what sets Zac and Zoe apart. Their site is a great place to browse all the best in modern furnishings for the nursery: cribs, rocking chairs, and tables, desks, and chairs.
Small Concept (Georgia/Online): With free shipping for all orders over $100, and lots of fun stuff to choose from, this Georgia boutique caught our eye. They have a nice selection of modern cribs and beds, including designs from Nurseryworks, Oeuf, and DucDuc.
Room & Board (Various Locations/Online): Room and Board does not design down for kids. We think their childrens' offerings really share the sensibility of the whole store's aesthetic. It's not girl-y or boy-ish, it's just nice simple furniture.
Gozia Home (Online): They have some unique items, including a large selection of modern cribs. Prices aren't cheap, but they carry a number of cribs that transform from crib to toddler bed.
Land of Nod (Chicago/Online): Land of Nod has a beautifully put together collection of traditional, fun baby and children's furniture and accessories, which are simple in design and calming for the senses. Their stores are mainly in the Chicago area, but you can see them online and pick up their catalogs at any Crate & Barrel store.
Weego Baby (Los Angeles/Online): A store for the "stylish modern baby," Weego Baby was created to compliment Weego Home. They have a nice collection of simple cribs ranging from $500 to $1,600.
Overstock.com (Online): Overstock.com's Kids Section always has $2.95 shipping for any size or weight, and their prices are 80% off the retail. Our experience looking for things on Overstock has been a little bit hit or miss, but you might find just what you're looking for.
Target (Various Locations/Online): Since Target adopted the DwellStudio line, it's become a go-to source for modern baby gear, with cribs in the low hundreds. We posted some negative reviews of the DwellStudio's 1st edition of Target furniture, but they've tried to work out some of the kinks in a 2nd edition of products. If you've had first-hand experience with the line, give us your feedback in the comments.
IKEA (Various Locations/Online): For Scandinavian style on a budget, IKEA can't be beat. Readers have recommended the Gulliver and Leksvik Crib.

i bought the Oeuf crib featured here and I cannot rave about it enough! It is sturdy, beautiful and was fairly easy to put together. We also got the conversion kit and hope this crib will last us awhile (thereby justifying the price a little more). Also, the folks at Oeuf could not be more helpful and on top of things! Great eco-friendly company!
our second baby is on the way and we had to throw out our sons crib because it got a bit damaged from being taken apart and put together 3 times for different moves... this will be our last child so we don't want to spend a ton on a crib, also because we plan on spending a little more for a naturepedic crib mattress.
i've been debating between the dwellstudio silver lake crib, the ikea gulliver, and the baby mod roxanne crib (not shown above).
i wish the target website would give a little more info on the dwellstudio cribs- they are sold as convertible cribs- but you have to buy the guard rail through the manufacturer. has anyone bought the guardrail? does anyone know more about this crib?
I'm surprised that Walmart wasn't listed here. I hate, hate, hate shopping there, but sucked it up after seeing a number of beautiful nursery tours on this site w/cribs from the baby mod line. They are manufactured by Million Dollar Baby. We chose the ParkLane for the under-crib storage. The Olivia is a dead ringer for an Oeuf crib.

erinpearce, i have the dwellstudio crib from target. it is a convertible crib but you have to buy the conversion kit directly from the manufacturer -- the email i received said "You can purchase that conversion kit from Foremostgroups for $69.99. erinpearce, i wanted to also add that my husband and i were deciding between the same 3 cribs you mentioned and the deciding factor was the height of the target crib - it is several (maybe 4? can't remember) inches taller than the other two -- much easier for us as a taller couple.
Ditto on the Park Lane at Walmart. Hate the store, love the crib.

One more vote for Wal-Mart Baby Mod. We have the Olivia and it is not only attractive and affordable, but much more solid than anything I've seen from a big box store. This is the first and only thing I've bought from Wal-Mart in ten years, but... its fantastic.
So much Baby Mod love and Walmart hate... I guess that's ambivalence. At any rate, those of you looking into your options might want to know that the Baby Mod cribs ship with the toddler conversion rail, so you don't have any additional costs down the road. I should add that one of the sides to our crib arrived dented. We contacted the manufacturer directly and got a replacement within a week, no hassle.
I almost went for the Wal-Mart crib, but in the end had to get the Oeuf. I will not support Wal-Mart even if they have a good knock off. I second soirish87's comment. I couldn't be happier with the Oeuf and know it will last through a few kids.
just got the IKEA gulliver in white... and am impressed with its small scale. if you get it, make sure you get the teething rails and possibly the toddler bed rail, as well.
We bought a baby mod for our first baby and it has held up really well. However the matching changer and dresser hasn't held up as well and we've only had it 9 months. We went with the Argington Sahara line for our expected second baby. We wont know how it holds up to use for a few months but it is beautiful!! We bought it in maple finish as it was on clearance and were pleased to find that the wood matches the baby mod Olivia crib perfectly. We just ordered another set of dressers to replace the walmart.
If I had it to do over again I'd buy another baby mod crib and spend more on the dressers and changers.
What perfect timing! I'm looking to buy a crib for our first baby in the next few weeks and still feel a little overwhelmed with all the options. For those that bought from the Baby Mod line from Walmart - which style did you choose? Any particular reason? We have a small nursery, so I'm not concerned with it converting to a full bed.

Wow, we are looking at buying an Oeuf & I just checked out the baby mod at Walmart. Despite the significant (WOW!) price difference, I think we are still going to buy the Oeuf.
At least with the Oeuf, we know that we are directly supporting a family business, that has sourced its materials ethically & sustainably, not to mention that they are not exploiting their workers to achieve a low price.

We bought the Netto Moderne crib on craigslist... it is a friggin awesome crib. I highly suggest craigslist if you're dreaming of an expensive crib.

Pali cribs are fantastic (made in Italy). We bought ours on sale for about $450 (6 years ago) but it is now being used by baby #5. They are solid, well made and use non-toxic stains and finishes. They come in a variety of styles and have been rated an "A" in 7 consecutive Baby Bargains books. No, I don't work for them - we've just been really impressed with the quality of the crib - it has withstood heavy use from four kids already. It was the only thing we spent money on in our nursery and it was well worth it!
I love my daughter's Nurseryworks Loom crib. It's not a cheap crib, but it's not one of the super-expensive designer ones, either. Apparently it's on sale now for about $640. It's rock solid, we've had it up for a year without a single chip to the paint. It looks exactly the same as when it was put together. We have the all-white version. I love the asymmetrical slats, it's subtle but very attractive. And Nurseryworks uses all non-toxic finishes and sustainable finishes. We have one of their rockers and I love it also.

I won my daughter's Oeuf crib and changing table from Giggle.com. Cannot say enough great things about Giggle and Oeuf. Crib is sturdy and looks great.
The gulliver crib was one of the best purchases we made. I think it's pretty stylish, and for $100, it can't be beat!
Our daughter loves it, and her toys (mobile, kick piano, etc.) all set up on it quite easily.
Plus, it's also rated as a very safe crib.
The best piece of baby furniture you can buy is a king bed.
