Everyone is different, of course, but we'd bet that nearly everyone can impact their day positively by waking up in a clean, fresh-feeling, bright bedroom. And imagine how calm you'll fall asleep if you're surrounded by a crisp, organized space that doesn't make you feel like you might be buried in clutter while you slumber.
The truth is one of the most important things you can do in your efforts to start the new year on the right, organized foot is to pare down your bedroom's elements, brighten up the space, and create a room that you can keep tidy fairly easily. We've published tons of great posts about how to organize your bedroom (skip to below if you wanna start right now) but we think the best advise is presented visually by a collection of photos from our house tours that prove that you don't really need all that much to sleep:

Sprout Side Table
This post is so relevant for me right now. My bedroom is about 8 by 8 and, while my closet is giant, there is no light inside it, so I can't see anything within it's depths. I desperately need to set aside some time to address the many problems going on with organization in my bedroom. Thanks for the inspiration!
I made a New Year's Resolution to make the bed every (week)day, and it makes such a difference! I find that while I'm straightening the bed I'm also more likely to open the blinds and tidy up a bit each morning.
yes, this is something I definitely need to start doing again! I kept it up for a while, but with the onset of the holidays and a crazy schedule, I've gotten out of the habit.
These photos are great if you're having trouble organizing your bed. . . .I think the biggest clutter culprits in most bedrooms are dressers and closets. I know that's the case at my house. The bed and nightstands are tidy (lamp, clock, book), but look to the right, and the dresser is full of brushes, bottles, and jewelry. Don't even bother opening the closet door. It's the only one in the house, so it's full of everything from laundry detergent to winter coats and Christmas decor.
A neat bedroom is essential to me. With two young children, I have learnt that no matter how often I neaten up the living room, hallway, etc. there will always be some level of mess.
Not in the bedroom, though. I have chosen a small room because I want this room to be the calmest in the house. I make a point of not allowing anything to spill in there, and that goes for me, too: only the book I am currently reading, no laundry of any kind. Even if you are not otherwise a minimalist, this room should be clutter-free. Once you have that down, keeping the bedroom clean and fresh is easy: get up, make the bed, open a window, done. When the rest of the house overwhelms you during the day, come lie on your crisp bed and take in the peace.
Thanks for this post. I've been browsing bedroom photos on Apartment Therapy for the past month and settled on having the type of bedroom you described. The first photo was definitely an inspiration.
I'm still wiping away tears of laughter about all the things I've supposedly done this month! Also, "advise" is a verb; I think you want "advice" in the last paragraph.
I think a simple way to keep your bedroom tidy is to make your bed after you got out of bed. Nothing beats the experience of ending your day on a neatly tucked bed.
@Kayakudeia, I totally agree. Making the bed takes the least time and makes the most difference :)
