So I started to look around at color combos that worked to warm up modern spaces. These stood out to me as ones that did. If you like, you can find vintage or handmade ones on eBay and Etsy (or even request specific color combos), or if you're crafty, make one yourself! What do you think? Too granny for your taste or just the right cozy?

White Enamel Flatwa...
LOVE those first two!
I love them. After much annoying 'suggesting', my mom knit me a beautiful afghan that I keep in my living room. My style is very eclectic... a little mod, a little boho, a little ethnic, and very artsy, so it fits right in. And throwing it over my shoulders when it's chili is like being wrapped up in a warm, cozy sweater. The fact that it was made by a loved one just makes it all the more priceless to me.
Numbers 2 and 3 are amazing. How about a link to a granny square tutorial?
This looks so good I feel guilty for getting rid of the crochet set my mom made for me.
Granny Squares are incredibly easy. It was one of the first crafts I taught myself at the age of 8, from this righteous pattern in my mom's crochet stash. I'd love to see them done in more finer weight yarns, which would yield even more interesting colour breaks.
I've been learning to crochet this winter, and I'm working on my first throw blanket now. It's not a granny square, just rows. But it was a picture of a gorgeous gray granny square afghan that got me started wanting to do it -- one that I thought would be perfect in my gray and white living room.
I hated these things as a kid. Now I would KILL have something like the third one. Lol. x
I crocheted myself a blue and white blanket one summer. And by one summer i mean the ENTIRE summer. The end result is gorgeous, but its quite an undertaking!
I've done a few granny square quilts. My biggest issue with them is that they take a lot of time. My biggest piece of advice to anyone thinking about doing it is to do them at different stages: maybe 1/4 of the squares be 1/4 of the way done by the time you finish the first square... it helps keep it interesting (and assemble as you go if, like me, you HATE assembing).
Purl Bee has a really good tutorial for these, I can understand it without any translation (I crochet lefty, and so does my mom. I go to her when I'm confused). Great for beginners, casual crocheters, etc.

Number 2 is by far my favourite. I would love to learn how to crochet. I can knit, but somehow it is a very different effect (though can be lovely too!)
As for a tutorial http://www.AlpacaDirect.com posted this one on their Facebook page:

I love the look of something homey in a basically modern or white interior. It warms it up. I've wanted to make Debbie Stoller's Weekend in Stockholm afghan for a while. I like the Grannies with white background. They look fresher.

Maybe this is the motivation, I need!
It always comes back around. I have dozens of items stored away-time to bring them back out! Thanks for the reminder.
An alternative to Etsy and eBay, DIY, and your very own granny to knit one to order: These classics pop up in thrift stores all the time. Most can safely be hand washed; if in doubt, dry clean a thrift store find.
I bought myself a granny square afghan for Christmas from Etsy from this seller. http://www.etsy.com/shop/turtlemurtle?ref=seller_info I don't crochet and have been coveting one for a long time.
I'm not usually a fan of granny chic. At. All. But there's something about a few of these pictures that is so compelling to me, I think probably because of the color.
They are pretty. However, they aren't warm because the design is full of holes! I wonder if you could line one with flannel or fleece for warmth.
Yay for crocheting! Granny squares are super easy and there are a TON of tutorials on youtube :)
So I love all of these. Might need to pull out the crochet needles. Wow!
I just started crocheting again and made a granny square pillow. It turned out just how I hoped it would!! http://www.insideways.com/2012/01/diy-crochet-pillow.html
Now I want to make a blanket...
I love that the granny square is back in vogue. They are so sweet. I love all of the above photos, especially that light and cheerful living room! Unfortunately, granny squares aren't the most pet-tolerant of the afgan realm.
I'm in the process of making one just like these! Big coloured circles on a fresh white background! Follow my progress here www.cecilymae.com
