As the editor of Crochet Today magazine, I commission crocheters across the country to design blankets for our readers: baby blankets, granny square blankets, holiday blankets, you get the picture. Lately, I've been spotting crocheted blankets pop up on design blogs (and AT's own house tours) and love how sweet they look in a modern and whimsical setting.
Who knows, these might inspire you to pick up a hook, a pattern, and some colorful yarn (grannies are pretty easy for beginners), or you might want to seek one out during the final weeks of summer fleas. They make great birth and birthday gifts and add a bit of homemade charm to any kid's room. Plus, they're practical too!

Great! Our baby daughter was given one for Christmas and I haven't yet put it in her room. I agree though, they do look lovely and cosy in chldren's rooms.
We have some talented crocheters in our immediate family (I've tried but can't seem to get the hang of it)- it means a lot to see their handiwork in our home!
I love to crochet (especially granny squares), so I'm biased and adore all of these. To me, a house isn't a home without, at least, one crocheted afghan.
Love all of these rooms. Handmade touches are so sweet.
I really love the way they look, but honestly, as a child, I hated them. They were full of holes that made it so I could never get warm, and most of them were made with cheap, plasticky yarn. They're lovely, but I've always felt that they were useless as blankets.
Off topic but, that ombre dresser is fabulous!
My 95-year-old grandmother has been churning these things out for years. They are all over her apartment. I'm pretty sure her cause of death will be suffocation from too many afghans. We make fun of her and call them old lady knitted crap. She just laughs it off. Bless her heart, we just love her, in spite of her afghans. However, these things do not keep you warm, get caught on everything and really are not that great. And you can't fold them property because of those squares.
I love granny square blankets and I really do think the quality of the yarn makes all the difference. I'm working on a granny square pillow now and once that's finished I've been asked to make a granny square blanket for a childhood friend's first baby.
You must use high quality yarn and modern colors, then they are perfect for a nursery in today's design world. :) As far as keeping you warm goes, it's not meant to be used as the only cover on a bed or something. Just to throw on your lap if you're a bit chilly, or to lay down for your kiddo to play on (in this case, probably).
Oohhh, tell me about the ombre dresser. I want!
Heck with kids. I LOVE my purple granny square afghan!
These are gorgeous.
