Aptly named “Plants You Cannot Kill,” Shannon Gerard's series of surprisingly realistic crocheted cacti were created for those of us with black thumbs, helplessly yearning for indoor green as the interminable winter drags on, and on, and on.
Gerard admits that her own inability to keep plants alive is what originated the project. She writes on her website: “After dozens of failed attempts at indoor gardening, I just decided to crochet plants my own damn self.” But despite the humorous undertone, the artist takes her work seriously: "All of my crocheted projects are attempts to address, to communicate and to mediate the anxieties I feel about navigating the world ... What I want to know is; Can I crochet into coherence the essential pain and glory of being alive?"
Her thoughtful meditation on the practice of crochet makes me love the cozy pieces even more. The cacti range in price from $6-250 depending on size and complexity, and are available from her Etsy shop and Magic Pony Shop & Gallery. See more of Shannon Gerard's work on her website.
