Design: CS-1 Side Table
Materials: Powder coated steel and salvaged red cedar
Designer: Heal and Bower
"We're a husband and wife team designing and building furniture in the Seattle area. We strongly believe in the idea that form follows function and that environmental sustainability is a key aspect of an item's functionality."

"The CS-1 side table is made with powder coated 1/4" steel and cedar fencing scraps. The cedar fencing is sold with one rounded end called a 'dog ear'. When fences are built with a straight top, the dog ears are cut off and wasted. We salvaged those scraps of cedar and used them in a butcher block style for the table top. A key feature of the table is that the steel surface extends beyond the cedar. This leaves a perfect spot for a drink- no coaster required! Like Larry David, we respect wood."

Sprout Side Table
Hmm... I appreciate the use or reclaimed wood for this, I really want to like it, but all I see is a cutting board.
I do like that they thought of keeping a metal surface for drinks....
The butcher block piece just doesn't work for me. It's not so much that it looks out of place, as that it doesn't seem to have much of a purpose. For example, if they had instead narrowed the section of steel where the bench sits and then wrapped it in cedar, so as to make it appear as if the cedar is an integral part of a bench supported by two separate steel legs, I think it would have been a much more powerful piece.
Isn't powder coated steel slippery for things like clay/ceramics? I wonder how much it all weighs, and agree with Yozhik this could be an intriguing idea in progress.
Yeah, I agree that the cedar does not play an integral role in the table. I can't help but see a chunky butcher block on a white metal table.
yikes, major overanalyzing going on here. i think the table is BEAUTIFUL! simple and clean. the hand made butcher block style wood is gorgeous.
It would be cool to have the cedar as a separate piece, so that the color of the base could change up occasionally.
And I bet if the cedar was in a chevron pattern all the 'butcher block' comments would disappear.
It's a nice looking table and everything, but I don't really see any innovation here. It looks like just another table with a hunk of wood on top. And sure they used reclaimed wood, but it could've been any wood in the world as far as what was done with it.
I love the mixed materials! I do think the pattern of the wood block feels a little too much like a kitchen piece for my taste. But it's 90% there.
