Two Cairo curators were arrested for stealing objects from the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and replacing them with replicas. The items in question were a statue of the fourth dynasty Egyptian King Menkaure and an ancient Islamic lantern.

Due to disorganization at the museum, the objects weren't discovered missing until the lantern was found up for auction in London.

Egypt continues to struggle with the looting of ancient antiquities, which has seen a spike since the 2011 uprising.
