What a way to make an entrance! This dramatic doorway by architecture firm Matharoo Associates seems to sway — rather than swing — earning it the apropos name Curtain Door.
The massive sculpture comprises 40 different sections of beautiful Burma teak, with each section housing 160 pulleys, 80 ball bearings, one wire rope and a hidden counterweight. The kind of engineering behind something so simple as a door — though not just any door — is ingenious.
When closed, the Curtain Door looks no less impressive – like a huge, horizontally slatted wood door. When opened, the "slats" fan out into a graceful curve like a curtain blowing in the wind.
I love how it adds drama yet softens up the concrete entryway at the same time!
