After creating our own makeshift radiator covers for years, we're starting to toy with the idea of having radiator covers made to order. A couple months ago, we received our Daily Candy email which profiled Sandcastle, a Boston-based company that makes custom radiator covers. Have you tried Sandcastle or do you have any other radiator cover companies to recommend?...

It seems that the bulk of Sandcastle's business is geared towards retail stores, but they also serve residential customers. The style of the covers shown here don't especially resonate with us, but it sounds like you could dream up your own design and Sandcastle would bring it to life. For more information check out their website here. And here's the link to the Daily Candy post.

I love the look of exposed radiators.
some good sources I found in Domino (RIP)

www.patterncut.com- they will laser-cut any design and size then all you do is screw or nail into mdf radiator cover.
Also, taking a parsons console table moving it over and drape a white fabric or any fabric you like. Then you have an addition surface display space to place a lamp or or other items.
So many radiators are works of art themselves. I don't think they need covering up.
I agree about radiators...but once kids are crawling/walking.....
Years ago, I had a fabulous experience with the Wooden Radiator Cabinet Company.

i like my radiators naked, but a shelf with a lip that rests just on the top 2 inches or so looks nice too.
I have no problems with the vintage look of radiators and I certainly wouldn't want to dim the heat that they radiate. I have no problems with lines, pipes, cables, microwaves etc. They are part of our daily lives and deserve the recognition that they fulfill a function in our civilization. Should we start covering air ducts, speakers, TV screens are we ashamed of our own advancements? How fartsy can we get??
I think that for some, a radiator cover may be more about functionality than artsiness. Although many radiators are lovely to look at, they can usurp valuable wall space in an awkward way. So being able to get a shelf in that space thanks to a radiator cover may be just what some people need. And with that said, I love Bostonwood (which was mentioned above) for making not only plain radiator covers, but also whole bookshelves and cabinets built in above! And the staff is really friendly and knowledgeable, by the way. If you're looking for a functional radiator cover, definitely check this store out.
I'm in favor of covering radiators, though we haven't done this yet. Every once in a while my husband or I will bump into one and get a little burn, so covering would really protect us. I am hesitant to make covers for the radiators in our rental apartment though- in my mind it's an investment- how much do these things usually cost?
we had a really positive with fichman furniture earlier this year. you can get a quote instantly online, and it is pretty easy to order online. www.fichman.com
me too! i absolutely love fichman's radiator covers. i ordered 3 in january and highly recommend them. the turnaround was super quick, they were cheaper than anything else I'd found, the customer service is amazing and the covers are beautiful.

These guys did a great job on mine. We purchased their economy covers. They look great and were better priced than anything else we found. They have fast turn around as well. i think they were shipped in less than 2 weeks. They even made a couple of odd cuts for us.

Ah, I see some posters who think radiators are things of beauty and they shouldn't be covers up haven't lived with them. Steam radiators can be a thing of beauty...kind of, in a dawn of the industrial revolution kind of way, BUT it is nearly impossible to keep the paint from pealing from their hot iron surface and when the steam valve allows just that little bit of condensation to form and bubble out and drip down the side, first the paint peels then right after that the rust form and it turns into an ugly mess. After painting and repainting, even thinking if I were to strip all the paint and just let the raw metal show, that would solve the paint peeling problem, but they are cast iron and without paint they are pretty ugly looking. Cast iron doesn't come off as sheek as brushed aluminum or stainless steel. No, covers do work; they are functional, attractive and at the very least cover what usually turn into an eye sore very quickly after than laborious paint job you were so careful with.
