These wall paintings by Portland, Maine-based artists Friederike Hamann and Colin Sullivan-Stevens — who collectively call themselves Field — are graphic and colorful, but also have a lovely and subtle painterly quality.
Their nature and botanical paintings bring the beauty of the New England landscape indoors and their more geometric line paintings — reminiscent of one of our favorite artists, Sol LeWitt — are absolutely stunning. The artists also have a gallery space featuring monthly installations that include their wall paintings as well as furniture, prints and sculpture. Here's how they describe their work:
Inspired by their time outdoors, where they gather and collect impressions of the Maine habitat, they try to recreate an atmosphere inside the gallery that distills the seasonal, botanical or geographical characteristics of the moment — thus intending to connect an interior space to a larger ecological image and diffusing the boundaries between architectural spaces and the outdoors.
