ReplayTV has already made the switch. They used to be in the business of dvr boxes like Tivo's, but transitioned to a pc software based dvr product about a year ago. I have had a ReplayTV dvr box for about 4 years (with the infamous "commercial skip" feature which completely eliminates the commercials without any remote button pushing on the part of the viewer) and couldn't be happier. I can't speak to the success of the new software setup because I am a mac and the ReplayTV software is for PC only. At least one benefit that I can see is that the annual fee for the schedule service is only $49.95 for the first year and $19.95 for each additional year. That is a substantial savings over the $129 tivo charges for a year of service.
