Since most of my house tours for Apartment Therapy are condos, I love the opportunity to check out sweet single family homes, like Dana and JB's place in Milton. This petite gem includes a surprising DIY crown jewel — an enviable garage-turned-art studio for Dana. The studio is also rumored to host summertime dinner parties!
Dana and JB's home is a reflection of their shared love of creating beautiful things. JB is a sustainable architect by day, but he's also designed and produced a number of modern furniture pieces throughout their home. My favorites include the stereo cabinet in the dining room, and the striking orange and white coffee table which grabs your attention as soon as you walk in their front door. Dana's paintings, large and small, also add a beautiful, original element to many rooms of their house, especially the large focal point pieces in the den and the bedroom. Dana's works are joined by an amazing array of artwork by others, including many friends, making the home feel like an informal art gallery. Respectfully, no room is left untouched by original artwork, including their young son's room. This is a place that what was hard to whisk in and out of quickly. I would have loved to spend hours really relishing each piece, whether it was art on the wall or furniture on the floor.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: 20th Century. Though we are drawn to mid-century modern pieces, our home was built in the early 20th century and there are elements like the built-in china cabinet, chandelier and tiled bath from the 40s that we have mixed with pieces from more recent decades.
Inspiration: Beyond a love for vintage furniture and designers who are beyond our budget, our home is a product of our life experiences, from work by our artist friends, and by Dana, to pieces we brought back from travels, to the two of us making the kinds of things we want to live with. After our son was born, JB wanted modular, modern, non-character-themed soft furniture for him to play with. JB spent a year designing and having a set of nesting chairs and tables made (locally). Five years later, they are still in constant use by our son and his friends who like to pile them up or make forts. The art on the walls remind us of artist friends, or places we've been, like Dana's paintings from the Tate Modern in London, the vintage map we bought in Japan ten years ago or the posters that JB bought during a trip to the Soviet Union in the late 80s (which happens to be where/how we met). Neither of us like or have time to shop, though Dana has a weakness for looking for gems at thrift stores. The matching chairs in the living room were $15 each at Goodwill, and the vintage Lightolier lamp cost $2! Though chance bargains play a role in our design inspiration, we have sought out some iconic pieces like the Eames shell rocker bought from Modernica when our son was born.
Favorite Element: I love looking around and seeing all of the furniture that JB designed and built over the years — culminating in the studio project in the back of the house. I am reminded of different times in our lives together and our shared love of creating things. Even Dana's rolling studio cart was a former desk built by JB (as is the plyboo studio table that used to be in the dining room).
Biggest Challenge: Time! In 2009, JB devoted many weekends to turning the little garage in back into an art studio for Dana. We tend to DIY, for good or for bad, so there is always more to do than we have time for given our full time jobs and the time we want to spend with our child on the weekends.
What Friends Say: Did you make that?
Biggest Embarrassment: In regard to things that people can see: the futon couch in the play room. It should have left our lives years ago. Dana's mother made pillows from vintage fabric that are almost large enough to hide it. As above, there is still more to do so this list could include much larger items like the attic with so much potential and way too much stuff.
Proudest DIY: The studio! Standing in the bright white room with windows on both sides, it's hard to remember the dark garage and strange carpeted office space that was there before. All of that went into a rented dumpster, and over a period of weeks JB jacked up the studio to replace the rotten sills (with much-appreciated help from a contractor friend). The floor was extremely uneven, so we laid down gravel and a layer of insulation under the plywood floor. JB did everything in the building process — including roofing and putting in two skylights — except for the foam insulation and electrical wiring, The windows were free from Craigslist, and the french doors were found there for half price. The floor is still raw, and there are still details to take care of (including deciding whether to add a cupola to the top to bring in more light), but Dana prefers that the space feels like a work space.
Biggest Indulgence: JB grew up with a black Eames chair. Buying one for ourselves is a future indulgence, especially because we missed the one sold on Craigslist for $200. Currently, Dana's favorite 'extra' purchase every year is to buy art at James Hull's 150 x 150 fundraiser (first for Green Street Gallery and now for Laconia Gallery). This can't really be called an indulgence because each piece of art is only $150, far below what any of the pieces of art are worth. Buyers only need to stand in line and get ready to run for the tag next to the piece they want. Last year Dana got the Scott Listfield astronaut painting for our son's room after missing out on one the year before — and a painting by Craig Lupien with built-in bicycle horns chosen by our son as his first art purchase.
Best Advice: Buy original art!

Shaw's Original Fir...
love the house but $15 for the awesome matching chairs in living room?!!! are you kidding me?! does anyone know of where I can find chairs like that? I'm looking for chairs just like that with wood as the frame.
@leendahoang...I couldn't believe my eyes either when I saw that! How come I never find such fab bargains at my local Goodwill shop?
I NEED that coffee table you made. Do you ever make others to sell?
Haha at "Did you make that?". Our friends/family say that a lot when they come over.
Love everything! The studio is great and the orange duvet is lovely (and looks really familiar for some reason).
Gorgeous. I love the red in the upstairs office -- bright but rich. What paint did you use?!
Love the upper paint colour in the dining room, what is it?
The warm red really wakes up all the brown, white, and black--nice home.
this is the kind of place that makes me think i could be okay with living in the suburbs. i love the stereo cabinet & so much orange.
i like the simplicity of the windows but think curtains would look much classier than blinds.
Very lovely, I really enjoy the mesh of pieces from different time periods.
Good ol' Massachusetts, my home state! Funny that my homies favor orange...I only truly embrased it when I moved to New Mexico. Always liked it but was sure it wouldn't work in the soft New England light. Apparently I was WAY wrong! This place is lovely! Nice work Dana & JB!
Hi Dana & JB: Nice work!
We *just* moved into the 'burbs north of Boston and are really struggling with window treatments. Hate the fuss of drapes...
But, love your curtains in picture #8. Can you reveal your source?
Also, what about the blinds? Our windows are typical old-house irregular sized ones, so need custom ones, but can you share where you got your blinds for the first floor as well?
Thanks!!
Bravo Dana & JB! Your home looks as beautiful and inviting as ever--it's so cool to see it grace the pages of AT. Glad to see the studio get some of the spotlight, too. My chandelier envy is still going strong!
That garage-turned-studio is a sweet place indeed! Good job!!
where did you get that lovely orange and white quilt?
I love your use of orange and red throughout the house. Pow! Pow! Pow! The art is fantastic and your studio? Wow! The "before" picture really shows the transformation. This home is so inspiring.
very bright space and love all the colors! love the gallery space too...and finally, someone who owns a pc!
hey! what a happy house!
can you tell me where you got the gorgeous master bed and headboard?
also, what are the dimensions of the mattress? it looks a bit smaller than average.
Wow, well done!
Very nice.
Thanks for the comments, and to Kyle for the great photos/writeup! @alllebasii, another coffee table is a possibility. You can also check out JB's tv stand in Joe and Katie's Jamaica Plain house tour (2008?). @locustst, the blinds upstairs are Hunter Douglas duette (constantly advertised on WBUR) and downstairs the super simple Louverdrape soft style. I'm not sure about the curtains. To those who noticed that familiar duvet cover on our (full) bed, it is from Ikea. As is the bed. Even better than the living room chairs, the Mies woven chair and the Italian one in the office were thrown out at my old studio and at a Uhaul respectively. This is karmic decorating, with the finds happening after some particularly grueling studio move or painting schlep. It does take time.
Ooh, the bath surround in the upstairs bathroom! ♥
You guys sure have a lot of seating in the living roomwhere would you want the Eames chair? XD
Very nice!! What accent color is that on the den wall?
I love the artwork in the house and the studio, especially the paintings! Do you have a website?
Love.
Absolutely love your work. I second the request for a link to your website.
I get it, but the legs on the coffee table and cabinets are actually Hafele.
Thanks to those asking about the paintings: please contact me at dana.space.paint@gmail.com and I'll forward images/updated website info.
This house is not really my style at all-- but I am so friggin in love with it!!
So impressed with the art!! I definitely have a desire to buy original art. Thanks for the reminder!
Thank you for sharing!
This is one of the nicest homes I have ever seen. It is exactly what I want my house to look like when I "grow up" (I'm in college).
Wonderful. Many great ideas here!
my only dislike is that the dining table is not centered under the light.
if you shove it over just a tad it will be perfect and my OCD can relax. :-)
LOVE all the orange!
Fabulous!!!
Lovely home - congratulations.
@ Dana Do you have a website to view your artwork?
Thanks.
This is really beautiful, one of my all time favorites.
I love this house! It looks like it is inhabited by real people with a real life budget who aren't designer-whores. It's so light-filled and you have lots of my favorite color: orange!
I am also especially envious of the score on the chairs: WOW! And that coffee table? Man, oh man that is amazing!
As clean and organised as this beautiful space is, something needs to be done about that desktop! ;o)
just lovely. unexpected pieces work well together and are a delight to see.
(but seriously: stay away from my goodwill.)
:)
Beautifully done. I am not a fan of orange but you make it look so gorgeous. I love every room, this is one of my favorites.
Ditto. It's delightful.
I would love to know the origin of the divan in the living room - it is exactly what I need; for now I have a foam mattress from brazil (interesting size, not quite american single but narrower and a bit longer perhaps) over a wooden base which I rescued from the recycling and to which I added some chrome legs from ikea, I have two of them which make a corner and look simple enough - anyways, if I could have two of the divans you have it would be ideal and even simpler... your space is amazing, thank you!
I feel so energized just looking at this place. I want to come over for coffee and records.
I love your bedroom. It looks so warm and inviting.
I love the art on the walls! The whole place is so colorful and refreshing!
Holy metal legs! At first glance at the living room, that's all I can see!
Love the towels and the comforter. Can't believe the comforter is from IKEA! Very nice.
love the studio!
I love the bedroom!
