Name: Dana Benoit and Steve Johnson
Location: Miracle Mile - Los Angeles, California
Size: 600 square feet
Years lived in: 15 years
Dana and Steve make the most out of every inch of their 600 square foot apartment. Even after 15 years (and with the addition of a new puppy) their small space feels just right. They have collected their furniture over time and even found a few inexpensive finds at swap meets. Can you believe they picked up their living room coffee table for only $75?

A few design tips to take away from the tour: The warm woods, classic shapes and artwork give the space a refined and sophisticated aesthetic. Smaller accessories complete the design and add a sense of personal style. The more contemporary elements (such as the lucite base table lamps) balance the darker colors. Even though purchasing weekly flowers can add up, these photos show how they can make the space come alive and add such great color and texture. I think that after taking the tour, you'll agree that their excellent use of interior design makes Dana and Steve's home feel much grander than its 600 square feet…

Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: What gives us most pleasure is the balance between the calm, ordered and disciplined on the one hand and the somewhat random and sometimes jarring collision of a somewhat eccentric family of objects. We thoroughly enjoy one foot in 1940's Paris or Milan, the other in 1970's Los Angeles or New York with an eighteenth century portrait of an English aristocrat thrown in for good measure.
Inspiration: There certainly is no pre-ordained path, but a love of the search is central to the outcome. We are entirely too open to falling in love with something unexpected and outside of our predictable territory. The combination of a baroque shell encrusted mirror purchased in the desert placed over a 1970's Paul Evan's "Cityscapes" olive burlwood credenza cannot be planned. We would say if asked, the one place on earth that we could give up everything and move into right now would be the Villa Necchi Campiligio in Milan. Google it.
Favorite Element: The most meaningful part of our house is the place for our personal photographs in our bedroom and in particular the pictures of our beloved golden retrievers, past and present. Paintings are also like family, so it is hard to choose a favorite. One small painting of a desert mountain in evening light, found years ago in a consignment store means a lot to us because it was the innocent beginning of a love affair with the desert. We look at this painting in our small three room apartment in Los Angeles and dream about our weekend home in Palm Springs, acquired many years later. Our backyard views that same extraordinary mountain and for the two places to be connected in this way means a lot to us.
Biggest Challenge: Loving and coveting way too many things and there being so little room to hold them. Editing and restraint is an admirable goal, but it takes enormous concentration and willpower. I suppose sometimes we cross the line, but in the end there is some pleasure in that.
What Friends Say: The best compliment is that they feel comfortable. We feel "apartments" are making a comeback and our little apartment is a good example. A city apartment close to everything you need, easy to maintain and compact enough that you can indulge yourself in some modest luxuries is a real lesson, especially now. Friends in Los Angeles are circling back around to a notion that Parisians and New Yorkers have known for a long time - comfort, luxury and small spaces are not contradictions.
Biggest Embarrassment: Paintings under the bed.
Proudest DIY: Steve is an architect and together with his business partner, Jim Favaro, designed two pieces of furniture in this house. These pieces were part of an extensive line of furniture designed for John Saint-Denis Atelier in Los Angeles. The pieces were designed many years ago, but John Saint-Denis Atelier is preparing to re-launch and add them to the line.
Biggest Indulgence: The 1960's painting by the Chicago artist Claude R. Bentley over the sofa.
Best Advice: Rotate. Don't be afraid to part with something. Sometimes you have to make room to find and include something old/new. It is the single best way for your home to always look like you. Changing.
Dream Source: Modern One, Blackman Cruz, Fat Chance or Therian all in Los Angeles. You can always dream.

Shaw's Original Fir...
exquisite!
perfect combination of rich woods and clean lines, traditional and modern, and a warm but restrained palette. I think this is my favorite tour ever. Very inspirational.
I love the little eclectic touches - the shell mirror is fabulous. You've managed to create a space that feels very personal, but also elegant.
Also, your dog is adorable.
Beautiful. Elegant and graceful. What impresses me especially is how the owners have incorporated classic pieces and artwork and the whole place still feels at home in very New World Southern California. I'm inspired!
This home is BY FAR one of THE BEST home tours on Apartment Therapy. Clean, tailored, sophisticated. No tricks, and in my opinion, no questionable choices. Very well done. I want to live here. Or at least come by for drinks!
A great marriage of different styles, which becomes in the end your style. And even you live in a 3 BR apartment it is has the character of big house. We also bring flowers weekly into our apartment. Thinks like that really make the difference. I take up my hat for you.
Such a lovely, well-edited home - I wish I had the knack and willpower to do such great editing!
i am swooning over that chandelier. i know what i want (but probably won't get!) for my birthday...
gorgeous. my favorite was the small framed painting over the bed with the oversized pillow and lamps. LOVE that.
Was anyone else momentarily distracted by the cute puppy?
No, but I was more than momentarily distracted by the cute homeowner.
cute puppy and homeowner indeed. does anyone know where the dining room chandelier is from? Love it!
Congrats, Steve and Dana! Beautiful photos of your great space! I love it!! The artwork is amazing. And the new puppy!! All gorgeous!

I echo DC Mom, this is my favorite tour on AT. What a delicous example of how restraint doesn't mean a loss of personal expression. The objects all seem transcended by the presence of home. Beautiful!
Beautiful home. I love your dining room, especially the chairs.
nice place. i can't imagine putting all that work into a place i do not own. staying put in one rental for 15 years? i don't think i could do it. unless it was a house and i had a great relationship with the owner.
This is so gorgeous! My absolute favorite house tour - I will be studying and admiring these pics for a while! Great work!!!
Wow. This home is amazing. The combination of the art, puppy, and MFK Fisher is making me hate my own life just a little.
$75 for that amazing coffee table?! Wow! I love its scale in relation to the sofas. All simply lovely.
600 square feet for all this seems un-possible!! The kitchen and bathroom must be incredibly tiny.
I love it though - it's very harmonious, simple and elegant.
Dog breed? Too blonde for Golden, too fluffy for Lab? Adorable!
"i can't imagine putting all that work into a place i do not own. staying put in one rental for 15 years? i don't think i could do it. "
You'd be surprised - It's easy to stay in one place that long when you're close to work, are under rent control, etc...
...i've been in my place nearly 17 years.
shanalulu- i think the dog is a white golden retriever.
PUPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful home, adorable puppy.
Thank you for all the nice comments on the apartment. Riley is a 5 month old golden retriever and is lighter then the normal golden color.
@tinquerbelle & @csharpeca
Chandelier is Thomas O'Brien from Grace Home in Brentwood. We took the shades off and put the cooler looking light bulbs in.
@rainywood
I like the oversize and small together. Painting was a Longbeach swap meet years ago and the oversized pillow was a dresser scarf my great grandmother had and I turned it into the pillow with a new piece of linen for the back.
@estrellitas
The dinning room chairs are from France Tradition on La Brea
I love it! Though it was hard to focus on anything besides that ridiculously cute puppy!
I love it! This will be one I'll come back to again and again.
One of the best tours I've seen on AT recently. Great use of space, fantastic photography (love the mix of the vignette and the wide shot- and smaller spaces are really difficult to shoot) plus one cute puppy!
Oh, and I forgot to mention those black and white chairs in the living room. To die for!
The dining table centerpiece is amazing.. LOVE!!
perfection...
Elegant. Sophisticated. I love it!
very nice. it's odd to see an interior that looks like it was designed by an interior decorator especially after seeing the cold modern projects on the architect's website. An example of live as I propose not as I do...
Love the place! Hard to image it is such a small space! Once again, when designed well, any space can live large!
A really wonderful (maybe the best) house tour.
What a gorgeous home. You can see everything, even the little objects like the salt and pepper shakers, were chosen with great care. And that dog is too cute!
BEAUTIFUL photos of a BEAUTIFUL home. love it all. well curated, unique and right up my alley.
well done!
Must have pup! My dog's name was Murphy - but was first called Riley. A great name.
Love your place!!!
Love it, love it, love it....
Puppyyyyyyy
No doubt, it's an elegant apartment. I just choked when saw the black sambo cup on the kitchen book shelf. What's up with that?
Loving the sense of symmetry evidenced throughout the entire space. And, yes, apartments rule.
This couple has great taste. But I would get rid of one couch and add an interesting chair. I would also get rid of the table in front of the window. That's a lot of black wood in one place and it seems cluttered with the small scale chairs. Just my opinion
i love each piece of furniture! a favorite tour for sure! thanks for sharing!
Very relaxing home. Sure does look bigger than 600 sq ft!
600 sq ft is small? They've done a great job making it feel much larger.
Great place - really wonderful but ...
For me, it's all about the dog. I'm in love with this dog. What a sweet expression on his little doggie face. He looks like a sentient being.
Exquisite.
amazing apt. and adorable pup. Ditto sambo comments...
love. love. love. GREAT TASTE.
The coffee table is amazing. The entire apartment is sublime.
MORE PHOTOS OF THE PUPPY PLEASE
A lot of nice photos of your living and dining area. Very lovely space. But disappointed that the kitchen and bathroom, as well as the bedroom photos were all little vignettes and I couldn't see the whole space. What I saw was lovely.
And yes, your puppy...ADORABLE!
I also love your sofas. Would love to know where you got those.
Nevermind about the sofas. Apparenty I have to learn to read. ;)
absolutely stunning taste....after noting where most of the interesting items were purchased, it's no wonder the space abounds with such beautiful pieces! All you need is a little dough. hello. Let's hear it for all the renters who have passion, interest and pride in their homes.
Just stunning.
Such great taste! Thanks for sharing your home with us.
what a gorgeous home! I can't believe how much modern comfort and elegance they packed into such a small space! NICELY DONE!
I'm still trying to wrap my arms around 600 square feet. My home is 800. What a tailored home. Nice job
Ahh the puppy looks like my Golden. too cute!!
Very beautiful, classy home. I too love the artwork in the golden frames.
I absolutely love it - this may be my favorite apartment to have been featured. Kudos to you!
Absolutely beautiful. And as a fellow city dweller (NYC), I understand about staying in a rental space for an extended period. If you find rent stabilized in a good location--drop anchor! I think my favorite is the painting over the sofa in the living room.
No picture of Dana?
Great space!
I like that art above the living room sofa.
Totally gorgeous decorating!
Wonderful use of space and "framing" of objects, with the beautiful flower arrangement reflected in the large mirror, etc.
Terrific attention to detail, great eye (aforementioned salt and pepper shakers).
This shows how spectacular an affordable rental can look in the right hands.
This is really a fantastic apartment––beautifully curated with an impeccable eye for detail. I am especially envious of the credenza in the Living Room, and the oil paintings on either side.
This looks like Park LaBrea to me! Certainly would explain the long-term rental. Much nicer floors than when I lived there though.
Amazing!!!! I love the lounge/dining space the most. The chairs are sublime, as is all the lighting. Fab!
not bad at all!
love. it is the small details that make it shine for me
That dog is all kinds of cute.
Thank you for everyone who took a look at the apartment. It has been fun and interesting to hear all the feedback. Thank you to Marcia and Bethany at Aparment Therapy for shooting our place and making this a great experience. They are a great team to work with. Dana & Steve & Riley
wow, if that's ParkLaBrea, then I'll swallow my dentures. haha
great job.
so tasteful, elegant, yet relaxed... when you see this tour, not only do you want to live there, you know you'd want to hang out with whoever lives there (puppy included!!)... i didn't see a source for the gorg b/w chairs in the living room?
i wish you showed more kitchen/closet-storage space
@Valentino1
The chairs where purchased years ago in Santa Monica. All we know is that they are mid century. We have never seen them since until recently. There is a pair (blonde wood, light blue fabric) currently at Stuart Galleries in Palm Springs, CA
Simply breathtaking. Still can't believe it's only 600 square feet.
...not in Park La Brea, south of LA MoCA :)
And yes... that Puppy was adorable.
This is my all-time favorite AT house tour. I need to know where the little mirrored bar tray is from! Any ideas?
@lanerobbins
The glass bar tray was a gift to us from a dear friend. She got it at Empiric Studio on Beverly Blvd.

want!
Definitely one of my favorite home tours. Beautifully edited interiors, enjoyed it very much.
What a wonderful, wonderful home.
The two things that struck me were the attention to detail-the little things really add up-and how absolutely blindingly immaculate the apartment is, even with a puppy.
I am contemplating a cross country move to that part of So. Cal, and am further inspired after seeing this home tour.
Thank you for showing us your home.
I so admire your apartment-your aesthetic; it's really beautiful, truly classical modernist of the early twentieth century (not mid!). I especially notice the placement of your artworks and the depth of the subject matter, that 'thinker' figure reminds me of an Odilon Redon . Even your landscapes have a sense of optimistic gravity about them.
Thank you to everyone for all the great comments. Dana & Steve & Riley
Puppy!!! So adorable! Also, lovely home and beautiful artwork.
the absolute best offering ever posted on AT!
Well appointed and beautiful home.
dana or steve, if you're reading this: could you tell me your framing source for the large painting above the sofa? we've got a large painting we need to get framed, but every time i've requested a thin gold frame, i've been told that for a painting that size it's not possible. obviously they're wrong, but i guess i just need to find the right framer. could you help? thanks!!!
