The light and the view. Our windows face southeast, so we get great light all year long. Our windows look out onto flowering trees and beautiful brownstones on vibrant Seventh Avenue in Brooklyn.
Three of My Best Tips and Tricks for Creating a Successful Small Space::
Only buy and keep things you love. We only buy furniture, appliances, clothes, etc. that serve multiple purposes and perfectly fit our style and needs. We also frequently purge items we’ve fallen out of love with.
Prioritize light. We’re happier with our tiny, bright apartment than we would be with a dark apartment that is twice as large. The light makes our place feel bigger and more cheerful and look more beautiful.
Get creative with storage. We have a lot of hobbies that require cumbersome gear and supplies (backpacking, cycling, beer and kombucha brewing, sewing, skiing, etc.) and have had to fit all of the gear for these pursuits in odd spaces. Among other things, we have four bikes, a full beer brewing kit, and an 80-pound dog. We repurposed an Ikea shoe storage unit to hold two folding bikes, bought a vertical bike stand, and put our bed on risers to maximize storage. The dog's kennel serves as a shelf for plants and books.
