- What I Love About My Small Home:
- My husband Charlie and I live in what used to be the caretaker's apartment above a former church. The building itself is so incredibly quirky (it has tricycles built into the front walls and a trapeze in the great room!), and it fits our eclectic tastes perfectly. It's very cozy in here and we definitely spend more time together than we would if we lived in a big, spread-out home. We're also so lucky to be high enough above the rest of the neighborhood to get the most incredible sunsets over the Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- Charlie is Buddhist and needs a space dedicated to his practice. We were afraid that it just wouldn't be possible in an apartment this size, but we ended up converting half of the bedroom closet into a meditation space. He actually gets almost 3'x6' of space in there and, in an apartment this size, that's prime real estate! It's his favorite place in the apartment...

Love it! So full of personality.
If I remember correctly, it's bad feng shui to sleep facing the door. Otherwise, your apartment looks great!
Are you guys in Ballard? Pretty sure I know exactly which former church you're talking about. I've always wanted to see the inside!
I love how cohesive it is -- the art and objects bring together what would otherwise be a pretty bland collection of furniture, and give it a vibrant personality. Except that amazing blue velvet chair, which I covet!
Yes to ANNE PCK's comment.
LOVE! Especially the circus-y curtains and the molar planter. Such a fun space.
@Anne PCK: That's right! I'm glad somebody mentioned that even though my home is far from perfect in the Feng Shui world.
Looking at the floor plan however, I don't see many viable alternatives. I suppose that in this case, the residents will just have to deal with sad lurking spirits coming into their bed while they sleep.
Would love to have seen the meditation spot especially as it is your husband's favorite element. Nice place!
"not very stylish"?? First, bratty comment to make, even for a contest. Second, don't agree at all. I think it's nicely stylish. They managed to have tons of different patterns and colors, and yet my overall impression is a spare, zen space. I give them kudos.
I'm guessing the tricycles and the trapeze are in the space below your apartment. Would have liked to see them. What is the column in the corner with the wire grids?
Oh, very fun space.
Don't listen to onieliad...it is very stylish. It's a nice mix of masculine and feminine elements too.
I like it. Where's the entry? What are the rectangular spaces off the bedroom and living room?
I love it! Feels calm and fun, and uncluttered. The slipper chair, oh yes. Where did you get it?
It's plenty stylish, and I'm surprised that the mix of dark/light/natural/white furniture works so well. Clowns are too scary for me, though the swordfish + diver is hilarious.
As the owner (person) of a late, beloved beagle, I can see that you've chosen a comfortable couch. Beagles are known for their impeccable taste in upholstered furniture comfort :)
Dan'l, where did you get the corner shelf in your living room? I'd love that for a small bar in my dining area.
Thanks!
Please... HOUSE TOUR! I want to see the meditation room and the trapeze too!
I love the wimsey of this place. (But I, too am creeped out by clowns- why is that?) I'm also curious to see the meditation "room" and trapeze.
PS: Where can I get a copy of that beautiful living room rug?
Thanks everyone! So many replies:
ARTNERD: Yes - we're in Ballard!
HIGHLANDER403: The corner grid is an installation by one of the owners who's an artist. He built this to surround the big ol' ugly heater...
GROWGIRL: Entry is in the kitchen, which you can see in the final photo. You have to go up a VERY steep and narrow staircase to get in! The rectangular spaces are closets.
KENDALL GREEN CA: It's a church! We expect sad lurking spirits to visit us while we sleep! :-)
DANIELCLT: Shelving unit is a vintage find - an old magazine sorter from somewhere... Wish I knew more about it!
LOLLYPUP: The living room rug is an OUTDOOR rug from Home Depot! It's actually really soft, made of recycled materials, and we can actually take a water hose to the thing! hahaha!
and to others who asked:
Blue chair is from (of all places) Fred Meyer, the grocery store!
I would have loved to show the meditation space, tricycles, and trapeze, too! But they only allow five photos! Maybe we'll get a house tour one day! hehehe...
Brave, fun and unique.
So much fun/personality! Not my style, but I love what you've done with it!
I love it! All these bitches complaining about such a great place. Ridiculous. ( I just tried voting twice and it wouldn't let me )
Very nice. I love all the eclectic pieces of art, so original! Love love the octopus pillow. where did you get it from?
Thanks! It's hooked wool and my husband Charlie bought this pillow for me at a little boutique here in Seattle (he knows me well!). Did a quick search for it online and found that you can get it and many others from this collection at caronsbeachhouse.com - just search for hooked pillows and a bunch will come up!
Your apartment reflects the simple beauty and dynamic creative spirit of you both! Blessed Be...
Actually, I think the bed is exactly right...even for feng shui. It is the focal point.
Beautiful! Very peaceful and elegant!
I love it Dan'l! It's so you guys, eclectic, charming, stylish, and thoughtful. ;) A great use of space, attention to detail.. it all just works. Well done!
Such a great place! I want to live here! I have to say I like this apartment more than most of the others here for the simple fact that the decorating looks PERSONAL and not like something out of a catalog. And I want to steal that carousel horse head! Genius "taxidermy"! Good luck!
great place, dan good luck (from Jermaine)
Hope you win! Love you both and the place too.
Hope you win, for Daisy
My favorite thus far.
fun and very, very creative. I'd love to see a full house tour too!
