As with so many other decorating decisions, this one might really depend on what sort of natural light your bedroom gets. While everything always looks better drenched in sunlight, a room that gets little light may be better served by a medium- to high-saturation deep color than by white walls.
But it also comes down to basic preference, which may have to do with personal differences about how we sleep best.
Which do you prefer?

This is one of those questions — like the Maximalist or Minimalist debate — where my answer changes with each image that I see. What is your preference, dark, saturated walls that help make a bedroom a cocoon-like sleep sanctuary, or light, bright walls that pull in the morning sun?

Sprout Side Table
My favorite is actually the second photo. It's exciting and has a lot of texture, but it's still neutral.
My bedroom is a deep chocolate brown and I love it! It is so relaxing and cozy.
I love waking up to a bright room. At night I'd like the dark cozy, but right now can't have both.
After living in various dark bedrooms with only North facing windows for the past 10 years I finally have a sunny, light bedroom and I love it. I just couldn't bring myself to paint it a dark color.
I prefer somewhere in between shots 2 & 4. Shot 4's bed is a bit too fluffy with all those pillows, but I love the color scheme. In my own bedroom, I went with a medium grey tone that can go either warm or cool. The bedding is all white & the curtains are white. The furniture is a mix of mahogany & teak and I have pops of red (art & throw blanket) & chartreuse (chair & throw blanket). It doesn't hurt that my sweet cat matches the grey & white main color scheme :)
I am torn between 4 and 5 -- 4 still has a lot of white and big windows, and although I love the way that 5 looks, I know I could never keep it looking that clean and bright, especially white carpet (yikes!).
Honestly, I'm not crazy about any of them although they all have different components I like.. The black flooring is making me drool. ;)
I think there's a time and place for both! Room #2 shows a beautifully done dark wall, where Room #5 shows a relaxing light wall.
I sort of split the difference in my bedroom. I have one really dark accent wall in a purple/chocolate color and a lighter stone color on the other three. With an attic angled ceiling and only two small skylight windows, it's already pretty cozy.
I prefer a dark room because it lets me sleep longer. :D
But seriously, our bedroom doesn't get enough sunlight (aka ANY sunlight), so going dark was a no-brainer.
I'm leaning toward #8; maybe because the duvet is the color of my dog :)
i really thought i wanted a super-dark bedroom... until i recently saw the roundup of pink bedrooms and became obsessed! now i am on the hunt for the perfect pale pink. and i will just make sure to have room darkening curtains:)
Definitely light paint, but I love a super-dark bedding set.
Umm ... the middle? Too light and I can't sleep in, too dark and I can't wake up.
For me, it depends on the room and the context of the home it's in.
I prefer dark bedrooms, particularly the last one. Two of my favorites are http://bit.ly/f0g9gk and http://bit.ly/hhTGwx
I like a bright, airy bedroom! We get great sunlight in our room... sadly my husband always insists on leaving the curtains drawn. Oh well.
I'm with @prticipntobsrvr. I like something in between -- light, but not too bright or white -- just dark enough to give the room some color, but not enough to make it feel like Dracula's crypt.
The room with the light paint is where I see myself hanging out on a Sunday morning drinking coffee and reading the paper.
Dark and rich. I like going to bed and waking up feeling like a king. White walls make me think of generic cereal in the morning: boring and no personality. I have great light in my current apartment but even in the previous apartment where there was very little light the rich color on the walls maked everything look better, even me!
I'm a big fan of dark colors almost everywhere except basements, but with bedrooms in particular. I have been told that it is more of a masculinity thing to like darker colors, so that might be part of it. The other is that I like to sleep "when" I'm tired, but I don't always have a choice as to "when" that is. If the room is dark, it doesn't matter if you were out until 5 a.m. and want to sleep in a little while. In a light room its a little difficult to fall asleep when birds have already started chirping.
I really love both and thankfully because we get a lot of light in our bedroom we can have a bit of both.
I was afraid the dark gray paint would make it feel like a cave but it's actually really cozy. You can check it out here: http://community.apartmenttherapy.com/contests/color/2010/entries/841
I'm torn - I like the idea of both of them. I loved # 4, and made up my mind that I liked dark, then picture # 7 is also great and I am once again undecided.
On a whim, I painted the bedroom "Phantom Mist" by Olympic. It's very dark, almost black on our walls.
I love it. It's very soothing and like a cocoon.
In pictures, I love dark walls w/ contrasting furniture and linens like pic 1. In real life, my bedroom window faces north and I have to keep the shade down all the time (floor to ceiling window, bed's right in front of it on a street w/ lots of pedestrian traffic). I painted it medium, then painted it dark and the room was gloomy and depressing. Finally painted it Farrow and Ball's Dimity (cream with the faintest hint of pink) and it's perfect.
I don't know which I like better. Out of those pictured above, I love #5 and #8. I love how bright and airy #5 is, but also love the comfortable cozy feel of #8. I live in an area that doesn't get a ton of sun year round, so I might opt for the dark moodier colors and embrace the dreary weather.
No.. sun evil! Cave please.
Im really into the black walls, my husband and I just painted our bathroom black and it looks awesome, however, I think white walls with black accents looks more sleek and fresh! Also its much brighter looking
The white theme seems to look best when you have white floors. at least its been shown that way in AT posts. I think dark might work better with natural wood floors. what do you guys think?
I have a rich dark brown bedroom, with lots of white touches and celadon accents, but I'm also renovating my kitchen to be very bright. I tend to wake up in front of my morning tea, not in my bedroom. With a year old son, sleeping late is a thing of the past... so, dark bedroom and sunny kitchen is my dream.
@irry, you must be related to my SO!
Dark, please, thank you. Unless it's pink.
As it's healthier to sleep in a completely dark room, the wall color makes no difference. Stepping down from the pulpit though, I'll vote for the dark bedrooms. I like contessab's description - like a cocoon.
These were all beautiful, though. But I'd have to vote AGAINST the death-antlers right over my sleeping head, thank you!
I think it depends on the direction your windows face. Bright colors for an East facing window might be too bright for some.
Love the bed in #8 ... any idea where to get it?
I'm a person who has the problem of sleeping TOO long. I have had both dark and light rooms and I definitely find the lighter room easier in terms of helping me to get out of bed. I absolutely love deep dark wall colours (chocolate brown accent wall in the living room, study was once a deep red, etc.) but it actually affected my mood in the bedroom. So it's light for the bedroom for me. And serenity now.
I recently painted my bedroom a taupe, and I love it, but I wish I'd gone darker, like in picture #8 (by Dwell Studio) ... but I was scared I wouldn't do it right.
I love white airy bedrooms that invite you to spend also some daytime there. Living in a small (650 sqm) pad with my partner and two cats I love to sneak to the bedroom if I need some time on my own reading or doing phone calls with friends at daytime. When decorating my bedroom it took me some time to keep it white and clean without looking boring or cold. But it was worth it!
For me, it's mostly about the kind of light a room gets. I always hear people say that they want to go dark but they're afraid to because their room doesn't get much light. In my mind, if your room doesn't get much light, painting it a light color only makes that drawback more evident. A dark room with light paint can easily look dull and wan. However, a dark room with dark paint can really look cozy and mysterious.
So, in my mind, the dark/light debate really boils down to making the most of what you've got already.
