Name: Darra
Location: Downtown Arts District — Los Angeles, California
When I first walked into the 3,100 square foot space it was literally 4 walls. After finding asbestos in the 80 year old floor, the space was ripped down to the studs…
The beauty of working with the space was that it could be anything I wanted it to be. My design aesthetic is Mid-Century Eames modern meets Verner Panton. I like playful shapes and colors. I found that curves did a good job of softening the industrial space.
I wanted to maintain the loft feel, so I put in only 3 walls - none of which go all the way up to the exposed ceiling which allows light to enter the space from the eastern facing window wall. The major wall was done in stainless steel and glass to keep the industrial loft feeling alive.
My favorite part of the space is the kitchen and the master bath. The kitchen is a true loft kitchen in that it is open to the space on three sides. I used Syndecrete which is a green concrete composite for the countertops. The master bath houses a womb-like tub from Waterworks.
I added distressed wood floors (the asbestos in the loft made salvaging the old floor impossible) in a chocolate color to add additional warmth to the space.
Thanks, Darra!

This place is great, but then again, she's in the design biz. Love it!
I think the set-like look is a big part of the design. Just about every inch of the architectural decor (sans the token designer furniture, yawn), is daring.
The long rock box and the adjacent shelving are reducing the width of the huge hallway. Was it my place, I would have gone with concrete floors, and left that delightful space open for indoor rollerblading.
But clearly that doesn't appeal to everyone, and the way it's set up now made me double take. After looking at both hall views, I decided I love the bold, graphic effects of both the rocks and the shelving. Subtle and bold! Very cool.
I like that your kitchen looks like a spaceship.
This first photo reminds me of Xanadu (movie) because of the old Pan Pacific Theater in LA..
Fun space!
Who wouldn't love all that space? The furniture selection and wall divider additions are very nice and give it a great vibe.
not my personal style, but it's amazing to look at! I am in love with the walls, the kitchen and the bathroom! Amazing job. I'd love to see more pictures.
Man... this place is so sexy. I love it, could see myself living there.
Darra is a fan of midcentury and eames so I don't fault her for having certain classic pieces. Why wouldn't she?
lovelovelove!
'Who wouldn't love all that space?'
<Timidly raising my hand.> Although this is not my taste, I think it's quite unique and eye-candy-filled and would love to see more.
I think the bathroom is amazing and the most unusual home bath I have seen. The rest of the apartment is a little clubby for my taste, although it is amazing to look at, but I'm in love with the bath.
Can you SEE into the bathroom from the kitchen? Maybe one more wall would have been necessary.. All in all I do love the space.
3,100 square foot and you have such a small livingroom?
i bet your bedroom should be very unique too!
more photos for as to admire please:)
Someone lives here?
Alrighty.
I'd love to know if that's a DIY ombre Ikea-hack on the chandelier. First time I've loved that chandelier.
I also want that hanging chair. SWOON.
A bit too industrial for my tastes, but the curved corners are seriously sexy.
