We're wrapping up our bedroom coverage this week and next week we'll start digging in on small space posts. As a bridge between the two subjects, we're looking at our favorite stores for essentials with creating a bedroom in a small space – daybeds, futons and sleeper sofas. Whether you're trying to carve a boudoir out of a studio or set up a guest room for the mother-in-law, check out these retailers for small space sleeping solutions.
• Design Within Reach may not exactly be within everyone's reach, but they do offers a couple of very nice, modern daybeds. The Twilight Sleeper Sofa is a favorite. (If you're in the New York area, check out the DWR outlet for items a little more in reach of a tight budget.)
• The Parsons Daybed reads like a bed so it may not work in a studio apartment setting, but it would be great in a guest room. The Windows Daybed would probably be more fitting for a living space. Both are available from West Elm.
• As you might expect, Daybeds.com has a wide selection of, well, daybeds. This online shop's selection varies from modern designs like this Astoria Daybed to more feminine pieces.
• The Flip Sofabed from Gus Modern converts from a modern sofa to Queen bed with a quick flip of the seat cushion. This seems like a lightweight sofa bed for anyone who plans to move, especially if that move involves stairs!
• We come across the Lubi Sleeper Daybed quite often in house tours. CB2 got it right with the design and continues to keep it fresh by introducing it in a new color each season.
• You just had to know that IKEA was going to appear on this list. With affordable pieces like the HEMNES daybed, IKEA will continue to appeal to the small space dweller on a tight budget.
• Resource Furniture creates the furniture equivalent of Tranformers. All of their pieces, like this Ito Space Saving System, fold, shift and pivot for multiple uses.
• They had me at their delightful name, Sleepers in Seattle. But they also carry really smart sleeper sofas, like this Ashland Full Sleeper Sofa by Savvy.
• We just looked at the relaunch of AllModern last week so we're familiar with their wide selection of modern furnishings. This Capitola Casual Convertible Sofa, with its bold color and unique shape, is on the playful side.
• The Encore Convertible Sofa from Room and Board's transforms from sofa to lounge to studio sofa for versatility in a small space.
• The online selection at Target, especially furniture, is quite vast compared to what you see in their brick and mortar stores. This Buckle Up Fresh Futon in Lime is a fun little seat, although it looks like it would only be comfortable for occasional sleeping.
• CSN Sofas has a wide selection of sofa and futons. We like this Fresh Futon Edge with Black Frame for not really looking like a futon at all.

I just had an awesome Muphy bed installed! Great mattress that I chose, comfortable spacious and cheaper than anything at DWR. It was about the same price as most sleeper sofas.
The first one is gorgeous, but looks supremely uncomfortable as a couch, which it would function as most of the time, no?
I love the look of the Parson Daybed from West Elm. And it's a trundle bed! Perfect for a guest room. The Lubi looks great but it got bad reviews from my family - not a good night's sleep.
I'm surprised this one wasn't mentioned:

I've never seen one in person, but I stumbled upon the webstie back when I was living in a 350 sq foot studio apartment & looking for options.
I went to CB2 to purchase the Lubi, but wasn't impressed. I ended up with the Flex sleeper sofa from CB2 instead (why is it not on this list?) I LOVE it. It looks amazing and is super comfortable. I'm so glad I got it!
We love our hemnes daybed from Ikea. It has been used as a place for me to pass out in the nursery after late night feeds, and it has also been used as a guest bed for us. It was/is a great purchase for our family and has held up well.
I don't quite have the knack of keeping the futon cushion from sliding (I know I need to purchase something for underneath.) but even so--I love my futon from the futon store! 2 pieces--an ottoman and the love-seat sized futon. I'd post a picture of my son sleeping, but he'd never forgive me! (It's very comfortable!)

I recently did a TON of research trying to find a nice looking, comfortable and affordable sofabed/futon. Most options are either cute or cheap, not both. and i wanted a sofabed that was closer to a full size rather than a twin size when in bed form.
I finally found this: http://www.hayneedle.com/sale/dwellencoregravelfabricconvertiblesofa1.cfm
It shipped quickly and its very comfortable as a couch and bed, and its under $600!
crap. i thought this was going to save the day. i have a TON of company coming at the end of the month, and although i already own a twilight sleeper (craigslist purchase) and the now discontinued ikea lessebo, along with a sectional in the living room, i'm going to be one twin bed short. i've been looking for something more along the lines of this sleeper chair, but for an adult (dammit!), not a small child. i need something compact & lightweight ... like those groovy sleeper poufs y'all featured a few years back (and which are, of course, discontinued). cheap (money-wise, not quality wise) would be good, too. help?
Loislane, have you considered an inflatable bed? They do have the advantage of being easier to store.
i have, austinisticalist. so have my cats. all four of them. i don't think it would last 2 days, even with vigilant shooing away.
