DC Deli Men Take on Design

Apparently, mouth-wateringingly magical hoagies are not the only specialty of Taylor Gourmet co-owner's David Mazza and Casey Patten. Last year, we featured the inspiring industrial-bent interior of their H Street NE deli, and now, thanks to Dwell, we've discovered their equally cool living spaces situated above the thriving market and eats spot. As in the deli downstairs, the two 850 square foot apartments above were created with sustainability, clean lines, and low costs as the driving forces behind their design efforts...

As the article mentions, 1116 H St. NE, is a somewhat unlikely locale for the quasi-hipster deli and renovated residences. Much of the neighborhood fell victim to the devastation of the '68 riots, and residents often complain that the city has made little effort to improve the neighborhood's ailing structures. However, Mazza and Patten seemed undeterred by the neglected character of their surroundings. Taking on their own revitalization efforts, they began their renovation upstairs tearing down dilapidated drywall to expose the gorgeous red brick beneath, and bringing in clean-lined modern furnishings and fixtures that compliment the industrial character of the space. After, they brought the same aesthetic to their deli with the help of Grupo 7 architects. The end result is a separate living space for each, and an enviable commute to their stylish business down below.

• 1. The three story structure comprises the ground level deli and two nearly identical apartments on the second and third levels.
• 2. Rather than springing for custom kitchens, the two topped green IKEA kitchen cabinets with stainless steel tables, then cut out a space for a sink.
• 3. Mazza's simple living room.
• 4. Taylor Gourmet's salvaged shipping pallet-decked walls are one of the ways the pair created a stylish environment on a limited budget.
