A Sumptuously Textured Birmingham Abode
B-Metro, Fall 2009

When my friend Mandy sent me a link to B-Metro's feature on this lovely Alabama home, I knew I'd found the perfect antidote to today's gloomy bone-chilling weather. Filled with layers of cozy, earthy textures and breath-taking architectural features, the home is certainly a feast for the eyes and a lift to the (rain-drenched) spirit.

Southern design is often slammed by minimalists and purists for being stuffy and frivolous. While I'm sure the claim may be founded in certain cases, we're discovering an increasing number of homes that feature a perfect balance between luxe comfort and elegant restraint. This remarkable home is certainly a shining example.

As the B-Metro article notes, the owners wanted to be true to the home's original Spanish Revival spirit and grandeur by preserving the casement windows, thick stucco walls, and plaster ceilings. With respect and "honesty" in mind, they added new details like reclaimed rough hewed church beams and steel windowed glass box bedroom that compliment the original style. Large windows, skylights, and warm white walls allow an ample use of dark woodwork throughout the house, which makes it seem both airy and cozy.

Check out B-Metro's wonderful article for the full scoop.

The owners have also devoted a blog to their renovation, daily design details, and all other aspects of their lovely home. So if you're still hungry for more pictures of this gorgeous Spanish Revival, feast your eyes over at 11bonita. Warning: not intended for those prone to fits of jealousy.

Incredible use of space - I love the mix of minimalism and luxury in the bedroom and how they utilized the rugs and curtains to soften overall feeling. The headboard picks up the color of the earth tones used in the wood clad walls and beams.

I especially love the living area. With the wood paneling and sunlight filtering thru...I feel warm just looking at it.

Wow! Tasteful, elegant and a wonderful use of subtle textures. For a place such as that I might even be willing to move to Alabama.

Despite the fact that the ENTIRE house is done in shades of brown and beige (including the wardrobe), I still like it. Some pops of color would be that much better.
