AphroChic Launches: The Dreamland Pillow Collection
DesignPhiladelphia October 10

We've seen quite a bit of AphroChic on Apartment Therapy; we were lucky enough to take an amazing glimpse inside her home. So it's really no surprise that she is now proud to introduce her new eco-friendly Dreamland Pillow Collection.

Jeanine Hays is the mastermind behind the AphroChic operation. She based the Dreamland Pillow Collection on the belief that a synthesis of high-end design and ethnic culture can create a style that is reflective of the individual while still being of the highest quality. We're certainly on board with a creative vision like that! These pillows are vibrant, interesting, chic and would help bring culture into anyone's home.

The Dreamland Pillow Collection is made from 100% natural fabrics. All pillows are printed on 100% Belgian linen, 100% silk, or 100% cotton. Even the packaging is made of sustainable papers and materials. The pillows are produced in San Francisco, just minutes from the AphroChic studio. They are made when someone places an order! No excess, no waste and no pile ups of pillows.

A Product Launch for The Dreamland Pillow Collection will be during DesignPhiladelphia week. The event will also be a panel discussion for Home Interior Bloggers. I was asked to participate in the panel discussion, so I look forward to meeting any Apartment Therapy readers that can make it!

Besides the recycled packaging what makes these pillows eco friendly?

It sounds like "eco-friendly" just means it's made of all-natural materials. But that doesn't mean it's good for the environment...

The pillows are nice but I am really drawn to the classic yet contemporary and sophisticated feel of the room in the photo!

Just because the pillows are made from natural materials does not mean it is "eco -friendly"

Cotton, linen and silk are natural fibers and more often than none cotton and linen (fibers) are grown with using pesticides. Linen from Belgium is most likely going to be grown and produced responsibly.

Where materials are grown and how it is produced is important to disclose if you are going to use the term Eco-Friendly". Where does the cotton and silk come from? Then there is bleached and unbleached cotton.

Dye sublimation process is only "eco-friendly if you are using water-soluble inks with no harmful Volatile Organic Content.

Down is not a eco-friendly product.

I think the pillows are lovely. I think it is great to work towards a eco -friendly process but if everything is truly eco-friendly "green" then add more details to your Environment Statement.

Lori, Im glad that you balanced out your criticism with the encouragement that you "think it is great to work towards a eco -friendly process "...

The label "green" comes in a million and one shades and not everyone is able to afford to produce TOTALLY sustainable products. Is it even possible to leave no 'footprint' at all? When we are so quick to give negativity to those who are trying then it discourages more people from even making an attempt at moving towards sustainability.

I agree that people/companies should be as detailed as possible in explaining whats makes their product or process green...but unlike some others, I dont get the impression that Aphrochic is out to deliberately trick or bamboozle anyone.

Just sayin'.

PS. Love the home.

My thoughts are that if you market your product as being eco-friendly, then you need to substantiate your claims with specific information to be credible. If your practices are environmentally responsible, disclosing that information will further differentiate your product from competitors and also serve as an educational tool for consumers. I think the above questions are legitimate and were not intended to discredit the business or product.

I thank you all for your comments and critique. This is such an important conversation to have. AT was nice enough to say our products are eco-friendly, however, the real focus at AphroChic is on sustainability, and you will see that in our Environment policy. We are focused on limiting our impact on the environment, and strive to do that through supporting local businesses, less harmful printing techniques, having a made-to-order product, and organic options for our tees. As we grow, we will work to develop even stronger environmental policies. While we are not 100% green, at AphroChic we believe sustainability is just as important. We envision a world where every company starts to think about how they impact the environment and to make small changes that can still be significant. Thank you, and so glad you like the beautiful Harlem home we did the photo shoot in!

AphroChic, hey its just throw pillows not a huge impact on the environment but maybe for our living rooms. Sorry I did not mean to attack I am in the commercial design biz where every claim needs a back up and data, very technical for LEED credits, and so on.

What you are doing going off and making beautiful things and trying to do it in the best way is admirable.

Your apartment is beautiful by the way and if I were a black woman I would so have an afro, chic and hot!

Lori should add hot sauce to the foot she puts in her mouth...

Unbelievable.

I love the line, plan on purchasing a couple of pillows; I wish you much success AphroChic!
