We remember the days when the shape of plates were pretty much the same across the board. You always knew your plates were going to be round and you just had to focus on what color and what size.
We remember the days when the shape of plates were pretty much the same across the board. You always knew your plates were going to be round and you just had to focus on what color and what size.
Now when shopping for plates you have more than just round or round as your option. Thanks to the popularity of television shows such as Iron Chef America & Top Chef that highlight plating and presentation we're introduced to new plate styles on a continuous stream. It's leaving us wanting to purchase similar plates to spice up our own dinnertable.
We're glad that we can get very similar options to the ones the great chef's have — without having to spend our life savings. We found some of our favorite shapely dinnerware at IKEA and recently discovered that Crate & Barrel is selling a new line of plates based off of restaurants and television shows like Iron Chef America — designed by Chef Ed Leonard. We're not sure what makes one choose square over round, or oval over rectangular — but we're interested in knowing what shape you like best.

Heath makes gorgeous square and rectangular plates for their Plaza line - the glazes are simply beautiful.
(Yes, I'm crazy about Heath - especially since I saw how everything is completely handmade)
Sure the prices are higher, but you can often find seconds in their Sausalito and Los Angeles studios.

As a home chef, I love white or subtle solid color plates purely because they don't detract from the beauty of the food you're serving. But they can be kind of blah...
I love that these are both affordable and visually stimulating at the same time! It's even more fun to mix and match the shapes for "table art."

I have square dishes in my Wedgwood pattern. I used them for dinner this pm. It's so much fun eating off square plates.
I also have crescents in two sizes. It's fund eating off any shape that's not round.
I also have round salad plates with an embossed leaf. They are beautiful to look at, but a bit impractical. It's hard eating off an embossed plate.

Caveat, my sister had square plates and found they couldn't fit in the dishwasher without blocking the spray arm...

One of my friends had a friend's daughter come to visit. They had square plates and cups and she really didn't like them for some reason, and wouldn't use them.

Ikea dishes always look really nice, but they are HORRIBLE to serve food on. Unfortunately, they conduct heat a little too well, so food is cold even before it hits the table (and yes, I even pre-heat my plates!)
