A Cathedral Heights gem curated with American primitives, painted furniture, and clean-lined antiques from France and Scandinavia. Although the store attracts discerning shoppers from around the greater Washington area, it retains it's unpretentious, neighborhood shop feel — somewhat of an anomaly among DC decor stores.

Owner, Diane Monash, set up shop in 2001 after spending two years searching for the perfect location. At the time, Washington didn't have many options for painted furniture, and Mrs. Monash wanted to provide locals with unique furnishings and accessories that would compliment and enliven the scads of ubiquitous chain store furniture found in many DC area homes.

In addition to painted furniture, unique stoneware, and vintage french linens, River House also carries an abundant collection of artwork by artist, Jennifer Lanne, at affordable prices. Most of Lanne's work depicts rural scenes in soothing natural colors that make them perfect compliments to the natural woods, Gustavian grays, and french blues reigning throughout the store.

The appeal of most pieces is in their humble elegance; however, for those looking for a bit more glam, River House also carries a number of intricate antique European crystal chandeliers that have been newly wired for use in contemporary homes.

If you're craving a bit of rustic simplicity in the midst of all Capital city hustle and bustle, River House is a must see.

It always amuses me that people poopoo others that live in the country as they couldn't imagine being that far from the city - yet all those city dwellers seek to decorate their homes like they do live in the country, hmmmm, there is something to that!!

Many city dwellers are actually from the country, though I am not myself.
