Closet Solution: Double-hanging Closet Rod

2 23 closets.jpg

Sometimes the best ideas are the simplest. I'm still in awe over this no-brainer, no-drill, super cheap trick for doubling closet space — a double-hanging closet rod. Here are three top versions for under $15...

The adjustable rack from Bed Bath and Beyond. It holds up to 40lbs, costs $14.99, and is adjustable up to 36" wide and 30" high.

The standard, no-frills solution from The Container Store measuring 30" wide x 34" high and costing $9.99

Organize It's simple, easy-to-adjust version for $7.99. 30" x 33.25" at it's biggest dimensions. The hooks on the side of the vertical rods are great for belts and purses. This version has graced my closet through 2 cramped-closet homes and I'm still pleased.

I'm a big fan of the double! It doesn't fit long things like dresses, but since I only have maybe 3 of those, I just fold them and iron when needed. :-)

I have the same situation with tam-tbag and do the same thing :-) I also redid my hallway closet where I placed the rod higher and since we have only short jackets, I placed shelved below - it cost $40 and it fits so many more things...

I have the Container Store one and love it. Perfect for hanging skirts, and my closet is just tall enough that they don't touch the ground.

Love this thing... for skirt wearers it doubles you're closet space. Now only if they had them in mini size. My new apartment is cursed with a vintage closet that's cute but not very functional. The bars run the depth of the closet which is already shallow. So I can't use me one of those handy doublers. Any ideas on how to make a custom sized one?

Jesse: Do yourself a favor and go Elfa. Since the closets in our 1928 house were so small, Elfa was actually an affordable yet "high end" solution to our storage issues. Purchased during the 30% off sale of course :)
