Design Advice, Dallas Style?

Dallas.jpg

We're heading to Dallas for the long week to attend a wedding, but want to make sure we check out some local design resources while we're in the area. We have a car and a lot of free time, so we're game to check out stores anywhere in the Dallas/Fort Worth area...

If you have a recommendation for a store or gallery or area to check out, please drop a line in the comments and we'll do our best to make it there. We look forward to hearing from you all, and wish you a happy and design-filled Labor Day weekend as well!

A friend's friends own a boutique called The House of Dang. I believe it is mostly vintage clothing, with some home accessories and gifty things. But in any case, how could you not want to go there with that name?

Check the Design Sponge log for its city guides.

Spend a little time at the Nasher Sculpture Garden. Good for the soul.

Check out some of the great consignment and vintage stores on North Henderson right off of US 75 in midtown. While you're there, eat at Victor Tango's or The Porch.

I didn't know we were calling that area "midtown." Midtown? Really? (Who knows how long I've been living on the west side of "midtown" without even knowing it...).

It's kind of like calling the area in Dallas near Bryan Street Station the "Upper Eastside" and being able to keep a straight face: click the link below, move mouse over map, and laugh out loud if you're a local and you know anything about that area and how it compares to NYC's "Upper East Side"... http://thirtythirtybryan.com/location/ )

And onto the suggestions:

-Forty Five Ten

(near/in "Knox-Henderson")

-Conduit Gallery
http://www.conduitgallery.com/
(near/in "The Design District")

-Sputnik Modern
http://sputnikmodern.1stdibs.com/store/furniture_search.php?FRID=lmqUZWljw5mY
(near/in what I call "North Henderson / Henderson / Henderson Ave.)

-Lula B's Antique Mall

(on "Lower Greenville")

-Haven
http://www.haven-dallas.com/
(in "The West Village / Uptown")

-Vinya

(near/in "Knox-Henderson")

And last, but not least:
you could always stop by Northpark Center (to check out the art, the architecture...and do some window shopping).

century modern is a great place for mid-century furniture and objects. i think it's in deep ellum or whatever they're calling that area of downtown down now.
have a good time and be sure to try the bbq at the lonesome dove cafe after your museum tour in fort worth.
oh and don't forget the kimbell art museum as well as the amon carter just down the road from the modern.
they're well worth the trip to ft worth and in my opinion a much better collection than the dallas museum of art.

If you do make it over to Fort Worth, check out Old Home Supply (http://www.oldhomesupplyhouse.com/) is's a great place for wonderful vintage finds. There's a whole shed full of antique toilets and bathtubs!

Do schedule some time for Fort Worth. Don't miss Louis Kahn's Kimbell Art Museum - right opposite the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth. Camp Bowie Blvd also has a few neat shops. Montgomery Street Antique Mall might also be worth a visit - there are lots of different sellers under one roof - it's more 'vintage' than 'antique' - it's also close to the museum's, so easy to pop in. Don't miss Sundance Square - enjoy a beer in 'The Flying Saucer' bar and pop into Leddy's Ranch at Sundance for boots and up market western wear. Reata roof top restaurant would be my choice for lunch (although the food at the Kimbell is also fantastic).
Other tips for Dallas - Sam Moon is worth a visit to stock up on silver jewellery for presents - it's a huge outlet type shop selling lots of accessories and bags. For cool shops, bars and restaurants, check out the Deep Ellum district.

I'm a little late to comment, but I echo all of the suggestions. And make sure to let us know where you went and what you saw! It's always fun to see your town through the eyes of a visitor :)
