Known for her "hints," Heloise has been writing lifestyle tips since 1977, when her mother (also named Heloise) passed away and she took over the family advice-giving business. Today The Washington Post features Heloise's hints for college-bound freshmen and shows her visiting her alma mater, Texas State University at San Marcos, and sharing her wise tips with current students. More info and links below the jump...

h8.jpgHeloise's tips include cleaning a shared microwave by heating a large bowl of water with slices of lemon or orange for a minute or two. She also suggests using black nail polish to cover iPhone scratches.

my cousin went to San Marcos. I didn't know it was Heloise's alma mater.

& clampers is right- dorms are awful. communal kitchens were the WORST. apparently no one knows or thinks they have to clean up after themselves.
