apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Do One Thing

What's your one thing that you can do to make your house a home today? We spent Saturday night cleaning out and organizing an overflowing walk-in bedroom closet (boring, we know). However, that one weekend project has made our bedroom breathe.

We forgot to take a before picture, but the above after picture is ours. Just imagine tripping over three-feet-high piles of clothes and bags of junk every morning. Now look: all gone!

Elizabeth Mayhew, author of Flip! for Decorating advocates for making that "someday" decorating or organizing project "today". Whether big or small, done today or this weekend, what can you do to make your home less stressful and more enjoyable? Is it painting a wall a color, finally hanging your art, or putting out fresh flowers? We want to hear your goals.

I recently read that a cluttered closet is a sign of being "stuck" in your life.

Well on the subject of closets and organization...does anyone know a good "closet system" that looks high end but actually isn't?

I went thru my "Grand Canyon" of interior design magazines, tearing out pages I want to keep, hitting them with a 3 hole punch, and putting them in a ringed binder. Ahhhh. Now I can buy new magazines!!!

The nesting hormones made me do it. I cleaned out all three of our closets this weekend to make room for mental head space and the few items we'll be needing room for once baby #2 gets here. Next is under the bed and all the piles that have been waiting to be put away for weeks.

I filled a cargo van with furniture and sat in traffic for 5 hours last night.

I want to flip my room arrangment around. I want to put the bed by the window and the reading nook by the door. Not easy to shuffle things in 225 sq ft!

I want to just get food made for tomorrow. I won't be home until late tonight so that's about it for me. This week, though, I plan to clean the kitchen/dining area and clean the bathroom. This weekend I'm going to pick up shelving and turn The Closet of Doom into an actual pantry/craft storage area.

I organized the pantry and put to use the many canisters, big wooden bowls, and lazy susans that I've picked up at thrift stores. Amazing what a hard worker that lazy susan is. ;)

so good to see that we aren't alone in organizing this past weekend.

for the past 3 weekends, we cleared out our extra bedroom to create a nursery, organized all our paper work (a year's worth), cleared out the dining room, organized our master closet, and started clearing out our basement and organized our garage. looking forward to the fall cure!

I don't have a digital camera so I can't post any before and after pics but so far I've painted the kitchen, dining room, and living room. I found some unused shelving in the garage that inspired me to completely organize underneath the kitchen sink and bathroom vanity and finish up by redoing the linen closet. As I went, I filled a basket with stuff to donate to the thrift store. This week I plan to paint the two upstairs bedrooms, and after I rearrange and organize up there I'll force myself to fill up a garbage bag with stuff that I don't wear or won't use so that there's less clutter to deal with. Next week I think I'll organize the garage and start planting flower bulbs and redoing a couple of garden beds for next spring and then I'll take a well deserved rest.

I had a tag sale and make 115.00 on junk, junk, junk. Amazing. Then carted the rest to Salvation Army. Yes! Basement is large again.
