apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

East #65: Virginia's "Beachwalk"

fallcolors1.jpgName: Virginia
Location: Florida
Type of Home: single family, 1350 sq ft

What inspired you to use color? The wonderful light variations (our only indication of seasons this far south) in this beach side town, plus the bleached colors of shells and driftwood, inspired a serene and neutral background for my diverse and colorful collection of paintings, sculptures, textile pieces, drawings and prints...

Color Tip: Always test your paint colors, and watch the test swatch change with the light. Make a decision only after you see it in artificial light and natural light.

Colors Used: Ralph Lauren picket fence white and beachwalk. Glidden's pine white plus Liquitex cerulean blue hue. Don't be afraid to mix your own colors, and write down the formula as you create it.

Fall Colors Introduction -------------------------------

fallcolors1.jpgWelcome, everyone, to our Fourth Annual Fall Colors Sharing & Contest. We're looking for the most beautiful & colorful home in the world and sharing all of the great ideas we get with our readers. This year we're amping things up and hoping to do things better than ever. There are two basic phases, the Sharing Phase and the Voting Phase...

1. Sharing Phase - you comment, judges decide

The 40 best, completed entries will be posted on a daily basis for three weeks. You can view them all at anytime via our new, improved contest pages under ALL ENTRIES. During this time your comments are VERY IMPORTANT as our six judges will be choosing 16 finalists from each region based on comments and their own colorful opinion.

2. Voting Phase - you vote till you drop

Starting October 20th, finalist voting will begin on a daily basis through our new bracketed voting system, which will pit our 16 finalists against one another until only one remains. Sound exciting? We hope so.

Best, Maxwell

Beautiful soft colors. It's so nice to see someone work with subtle, desaturated tints instead of all the in-your-face color promoted on AT.

You've done a beautiful job of picking the right hues to complement the warm tones of the wood. This illustrates perfectly how color compliments can bring each other out without resorting to intense saturation. Each subtle hue lands perfectly within the light palette. And just the right proportion of black to add crisp contrast without destroying the pale feel.

Nice trick with the two-tone wall treatment! The blue "wainscoting" helps that dresser pop from the wall, without having to paint the whole room blue. And I LOVE that countertop! Is it original Formica?

Makes me miss Tampa Bay...

So funny, Kate (NC). The neutral furnishings are an excellent backdrop for your awesome art collection. This is really well done.

I love the subtlety of this and hope that people don't slam it just because it's not bright. This shows restraint and makes for a beautiful context for the art. I love how comfortable the furniture looks. Nothing overly formal or perfect, just some nice pieces to sit in or on while contemplating the art.

I love the office. The bedroom is so cool, soft and comfortable. These muted colors must make for a refreshing space amidst Florida's heat.

Well put together, good composition and a mix of unusual, personal objects.

There is nothing subdued about this apartment. It's personal and playful, exotic and familiar, eclectic and restrained. Well done.

love the collections but i think this takes "neutrality" to a really dull level.. I appreciate subtle, but this verges on boring.
