Rittenhouse Square Park Events
Philadelphia

Rittenhouse-5-6-Kristen.jpg

Rittenhouse Square Park is one of my favorite places in Philadelphia and I have a feeling a few other people might feel the same way. There are so many events that keep Philadelphia residents entertained throughout these warm months. The square is a great place to meet new people, lay in the grass, play with dogs or simply people watch. I'm happy there are organizations that keep an extra look out for the park!

Friends of Rittenhouse is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and beautification of Rittenhouse Park. In doing so, they host several events at the park throughout the year and they're super fun! All of the events featured on the Friends of Rittenhouse website seem so fun and I plan on attending as many as possible. Here are the events coming up this week:

Rittenhouse Flower Market
Wednesday & Thursday, May 6 & 7, 2009
Enjoy the many flower-filled stalls

Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival
Saturday, May 9, 2009
Walnut St. is closed down from Broad to 19th to make room for a pedestrian parade and events.

Philly Cares Day
Saturday, May 16, 2009
They will provide the trowels, flowers, and gloves — you provide the energy. Meet at the goat at 9am.

I do love Rittenhouse Square...but I stopped feeling great about laying on the grass after seeing several rats having a field day running in the shrubbery beneath me ledge. *shudder*

Now that ApartmentTherapy's covering Philadelphia, may I give a mention to another, equally great city park?

Clark Park is located in the "streetcar suburb" area of West Philadelphia, a genuine community heart surrounded by Victorian twins. There are massive Farmer's Markets every Saturday run by the Food Trust, monthly Flea Markets run by th Uhuru Solidarity Committee, and summers full of events ranging from music festivals to performances of Shakespeare.

The Friends of Clark Park maintains a website at http://www.clarkpark.info, and for a taste of the place, have a l;ook at a video I made about two years ago:

Once summer rolls around, they also have concerts on Wednesday evenings.

Rittenhouse Square is, bar none, my favorite public square along the mid-Atlantic states. It is the absolute best in terms of design and surrounding land use.

I fell in love with my now husband in Rittenhouse while studying for exams. It's not big, but it's a magical place, especially in the spring and early summer. (It's also beautiful covered in snow and lit up in the winter.)

Rittenhouse Square is considered a park. It was "one of the five original open-space parks planned by William Penn and his surveyor Thomas Holme during the late 17th century in central Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The park cuts off 19th Street at Walnut Street and also at a half block above Manning Street"- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rittenhouse_Square

@sgnt13, Rittenhouse Square refers to the area at large, including all of the stores and restaurants on the other side of the street, while Rittenhouse Square Park, refers solely to the area within the fence. Not that comment forums have to be all hugs and kisses, but sh!t, keep your smug ass in bed if you don't have anything good to say.

I'm so excited to see Philly featured! We're more partial to Washington Square park because we live closer to it. But I was planning to attend the Rittenhouse Festival this weekend.

And Brian Siano, hooray for Clark Park! We loved going there when we lived in West Philly.

Rittenhouse Square and the area around now rival NYC with restaurants and even a Barneys on Walnut Street. Washington Square is great as well. Philly has most certainly transformed itself into a very cool city.

Wow, How exciting that you are featuring one of my favorite places. I have some great memories of lots of great concerts and artist events. Oh and some of the best restaurants are in the area. I sure miss living there.

This is why I miss Philadelphia. D.C. has events like this, but they don't seem as cohesive or all-consuming. Rittenhouse Square - event or not, summer or winter, day or evening - is one of my favorite places to be.
